Nice work on the Walk Around. Appreciate all the work you have done. Got to look at all of your media. I just got a good used Snugtop Rebel. I have to wire the 3rd brake light, add 12V, get Bed Stiffeners, add a wireless lock to work with my Key Fob, add Tracks on Top...and other stuff. Again - Nice work.

I am really considering a shell topper. I had a lead on a color matched one in St. Louis, but it sold quickly before I could get there. The guy didn't have much info on it either. I have really been researching a lot, but I am now getting concerned I may be in over my head. My main concern is weight. How much do these shells weigh on average? Will I need to upgrade suspension eventually? I do use my bed to haul stuff.

I think my leer 180 (midrise, with windoors) came in around the 250lb mark, and hardly moved the springs when I put it on. I've seen pictures of people putting pallets of concrete load into their tacomas, and yeah, it looks awful but the truck took it and was fine after. A shell should be fine w/o any upgrades.

I had a fiberglass shell (cab height, 'raven' brand) for over a decade on the stock TRD-OR leafs on my first gen and it was fine. Adding a large RTT to that definitely strained the system but again went for ~4 years before installing a Deaver 8-pack J59 at 170K miles. Shell was probably ~200 lbs and the RTT was another 150lbs.

I think you'd be fine with the shell alone but if you consistently carry a heavy load you may want to upgrade suspension just as you would if you didn't have a shell.

Get the topper and install add-a-leafs or air bags. AAL or Sumo springs are install and forget but not load adjustable. Air bags need frequent refills to maintain minimum air pressure but ARE totally load adjustable so you’ll never have a harsh ride or be bouncing of the bump stops which will wreck your leafs. For most I’d say leafs or Sumo’s would be preferred. I did OBA so it was one more use for it.

I have the Decked system too so I went with airbags with the daystar floating system. I also upgraded my springs. I love the airbags because I tow a 4K lb Opus trailer too.

Loving this thread! Been waiting for 4+ months for my mid rise ARE to arrive and just got the call. It’ll be installed this weekend.

any advice from your guys experience that I could pass along to the installer?

I’m pretty sure he’ll be running 12v into the bed for the led light strips. I’ve got a drawer platform already built and ideally would like it as water tight as possible. Especially living in the PNW.

thanks and will post some pics once it’s installed

    Okay, here's what to do.
    a. Have 911 pre-dialed on the phone.
    b. Bring a folding chair if you've got weak knees.
    c. Do not enter the garage unless invited. (insurance reasons)
    d. If you see a small scratch, ignore it. It will cost you another 6 weeks and it will happen again.
    e. Don't eat taco's the night before.
    f. Congrats on the choice, and remember we're all here waiting on pictures. If you fail to post pics, we will hunt you down....

The transition between front rail and side rail caps is always problematic for the seal. Other leak points are the screw holes where roof mounted tracks penetrate and sealant or bitumen patches aren’t used.
