Anyone have a good "gotta-have-it" tool, or other item in the $25-30 range from Harbor Freight?

I got a giftcard from there for Christmas and I'm out of ideas. I typically try to use gift cards to tool / hardware places for items I'd otherwise never spend money on, unless there's a specific item I have my eyes on, and right now I've got nothing.

I had been hoping for something like a soldering stand for my iron or something of that nature, but I didn't see anything on their site. I know their stuff is borderline junk and I don't have a ton from them outside of my air tool setup and some single-use tools, but something on the more obscure end of the scale I might use 2-3x a year max could be useful.

Yeah I hear ya! It's tough working with a mask on all day. Some of the time I am wearing a respirator anyways so I guess I have to get used to it.

I wonder if the low tax rate there is offset by the relatively high price of a lot of the properties there?

I really can't imagine that the town of Greenwich isn't getting theirs somehow. I'd imagine the wealthy (i'm sure all types live there, but lets be honest it's known for wealth) demand the best schools, public services, etc...

Drove a 6.2 F-250 home last night for some road testing/diagnostics. Not too shabby. I love the platform, but I could almost hear the dollar bills shooting out the tailpipe while cruising at 50mph.

    Needs moar dieselssss

I look at school district contracts to see what the income difference is. Nearly all of them are posted online--there's one district out near Boston that has a note from their union instead saying they don't believe it's in their best interest to have their contract publicly available. I was so tempted to do a public records request for it and post it myself. They're public jobs, so it's public record.

But, back to the point, Greenwich is probably the highest I've seen. If I'm interpreting job titles correctly I could take an entry level computer tech job with the town or schools there and make the same as I currently do as a director.

    Eh...
From what I've read the 6.7 is only good for about 16-17, on average. Not that much better than what I've seen for averages on the 6.2, and once you figure in the higher cost of diesel in this area the gasser is probably actually cheaper to run. Gotta pay to feed the horses...

    Edit-
I have read of people getting as high as the mid-20's on a tank with the diesel, but they're running a zero-option 2wd with straight-rib tires and helium shoes.

Correct me if i am wrong, but doesn't the F-250 have a untrustworthy past for being extremely unreliable not only in engines but design as well? I hear great things about the F150 and F350 but all I hear is horrid things about anyone that has a f250. This is knowing that you do have one but yours is a 99 knowing that your specific one was built at a time when companies gave a crap about their products.

I get 21-22 with my 7.3, and with some tuning magic on the 6.7 the mileage improves. DPF wastes a lot of fuel.

Not to mention, towing with that 6.2 will give you like 9mpg, when you can get like 15-16 with the 6.7 :notsure:

I'd have a diesel in my Crosstrek if I had the time to EE20 swap it and get the wiring work. Diesel is the way

    Yes and no.
The 7.3's were dead reliable but when they couldn't pass emissions anymore Ford decided to start making their own in-house diesels and their first attempts (the 6.0 & 6.4 Powerstrokes) made good power when they were new, but turned out to be unreliable money pits once they had some miles on them. The 6.7 that they intro'd in 2010 or 2011 has proven to be a much more reliable plant.

Edit- the 6.0 was basically the embodiment of Murphy's Law, in that if something on it could go wrong, it would. Blown head gaskets, EGR problems, injector failures, sticky turbos, oil cooler failures...
At this point a 6.0 Ford is probably the cheapest diesel you can buy, but you'll spend more maintaining it than it's worth.

The 6.4 was better in that it didn't have as many problems, but once you got past 150k you were basically guaranteed to need an engine rebuild due to bad fuel pumps and failed injectors, cracked or melted pistons, and EGR problems.

The modern 250 and 350 platforms are nearly identical. The differences really come down to spring/payload capabilities. The 250's ride a little smoother. The 350's rattle your teeth out, but are better when you toss a plow on the front or a trailer on the back.
You got those kinda flip-flopped. You can buy an 08-10 6.4 for next to nothing. You typically don't see them over 100,000 miles. I've worked at Ford for 1.5 years, and I have literally seen ONE 6.4 diesel that runs and drives... And you can bet your Birkenstocks and flannel shirt that it was in for running concerns with catastrophic diagnostic results.. If you say the words 'tow' or 'mild uphill grade' or '5 passengers in the cabin' that thing gets nervous and overheats. They're notorious for blowing radiators as well. The 08-10 bodies are a common one to buy, yank out the PowerJoke, and make yourself a nice, cheap, low mileage Fummins swap!

The 6.0 you can bulletproof by installing head studs, a stronger oil cooler, and deleting the EGR system. The 6.0 was actually quite a reliable engine once those issues are sorted. Then of course, you have the injector control modules that crap out, constantly faulty PCMs and injectors, but overall they're not bad! We still have quite a few 100-200k 6.0's rolling in for regular maintenance.

It's possible. When I was writing service the 6.0's were much more common problem children. Of course, the 6.4's were still relatively new at that point.

Edit-- On the other hand, the fact that 100-200k is really still pretty young for anybody else's diesel but good for an early Powerstroke is an indicator of just how unreliable they really are.

Not saying the 6.0 wasn't without issue, but the 6.4 was born to die

And yeah, the 7.3's go forever. And we have a few *cough*emissions noncompliant*cough* 6.7's that have well over 200k. A strong engine coupled with a body that isn't going to turn into Swiss cheese in 5 years is ending up with some promising results!
