Exhaust tip paint peeling. Truck running too hot?!

What is going on?? First tip lost almost all the paint in 3 months, 1.5k miles. It was a cheaper tip so the muffler shop upgraded it for me to a double walled one yesterday and after 20 miles it’s peeling again. I had this exact tip on my v8 4x4 Tahoe for a few years and it was just fine. Is my truck just running too hot to have a painted exhaust tip?

Not sure. I would assume the exhaust tip companies would know how to create them correctly? Idk anymore.

 

That looks like they welded a stainless tip on, then painted it black themselves.

 

Ok thanks. I’m going to just go back by and see what they say. I’m kinda over it and will probably just leave it.

Not sure. I’m assuming the oem one is a different paint.

 

They said that is normal from the heat of the truck running. It won’t happen on the outside and if it does, it’ll be the first time they’ve seen that. They said once the carbon scoring starts, it’ll be black anyways on the inside. I guess we will see. If the exterior does start to peel, they will be replacing it yet again.

 

I purchased the Toyota black chrome exhaust tip for my taco, looked pretty for the first few weeks. Then I noticed the area around the tip started to discolor (it's a little bit dirty, but the discolored area won't clean up).

 

Shitty paint Job. Just cut that shit off at the axle

 

I would assume poor paint prep and or cheap paint before assuming anything is wrong with the vehicle.

 

I thought about getting the OEM chrome tip but found them a bit pricey. I sprayed my tailpipe flat black with high-temp paint, and it still looks great! I mostly didn't like seeing the plain exhaust steel look - don't even notice the tailpipe anymore.

 

I'd ask for a refund. I wouldn't expect that to happen after just a few weeks.

 

Just spray it yourself with some BBQ grill paint.

 

Weird. My wife's truck came from factory with a black tip. 4 months later still looks like new
