I’ll echo on the 2017 recomendation. I have a ‘17 built in aug/Sept i think. Just missed all the recalls. No goofy sensor in grille....so far only issue was my rear differential housing bolts needing replaced/retorqued by toyota...was a factory fuck up causing them diffs to drip. Easy breezy fix paid for by toyota.

It’s for your wife and she already drives a manual. Replace your old one with the newest manual transmission one you can afford. I bought my 19 trd sport manual in 2020 with 7k miles sticker with all the options was $45k. I paid $37k with extended warranty. The good deals are hard to find. Do your homework and be ready to pounce on a good deal the early bird gets the worm

I'll toss in another vote for the 2017. No TSS. No radar cruise. Still has the driver's side cubby in the rear. Crawl Control wasn't nerfed (if you're looking for an Off Road or above). Quite frankly, I think the transmission issues are overblown. I've been very happy with mine. I do wish I had Android Auto though. I like the new LEDs too, but my aftermarket ones have been good too. Plus I like the LED accent DRLs better in the 2017 style headlights vs the new LEDs.

My vote, I have the 2019, and actually like the TSS and Radar Cruise Control (more tools in the quiver). :notsure: I also prefer to NOT have the Toyota Connect subscription service that comes with the 20+ models. :sadviolin:

Can you elaborate on what you mean by the ECM update? I got a 2020 over the summer and haven't heard of this before.

So sorry to hear about your experience. Is this something that typically happens with Super White more than the other colors? I got a 2020 in Super White over the summer and now I'm nervous!

FWIW my 2020 came with remote start from the keyfob stock, although I'm not sure if that's exclusively on TRD Pro or not.

It might be part of the technology package which adds things like the little sensors on the rear bumper, led headlights, and some other stuff.

OP, from what I understand '20 was a mid-cycle refresh year for the Taco so that year got more upgrades then prior years. I have a '20 TRD OR with the Tech package and love it! For me the Radar Cruise Control makes driving a car without Radar Cruise Control feel dangerous, I absolutely *love* the OEM LED headlights, fog lights and auto High-Beams (hands-down this truck has the best headlights I've ever driven). The Nav screen is nice. I've not used Carplay or Android Auto so I can't speak to those. Having a power seat for me wasn't a necessity (I'm the only one who has driven my Taco since I bought it) however it does add a sense of luxury and I could see how having it would make things easier for a household with multiple drivers.

I agree with what others have said; used prices are crazy (always seems to be the case with Taco's) so if it's practical your best bet would probably be to go with a new one.

    Good luck!

There are some threads dedicated to this, but I’m pretty sure it was the 16-18 model years that were painted in Mexico specifically. You should be fine but a lot of us have this issue. Definitely something to look into and to keep an eye on before that 36k mile warranty is gone.

2018 plus- I LOVE the radar cruise control it’s one of the best things ever. I don’t understand why someone would prefer not to have the TSS system??

I hated the TSS in every rental Toyota I’ve driven, so I’m happy not to have it in my ‘17.

Some newer models have more usable features if that's what you're looking for. I didn't see anyone else mention the birds eye view camera, pretty much a camera in the front grille and under the side mirrors. Makes going over a ridge easier and parallel parking easier. I wish mine had it.

I think your wife should figure out what features she wants and go from there.

The adaptive cruise control is amazing. Lane departure is nice but can get annoying, though it has helped when for long days when I drive 3-4 hours, do some activity (hike/bike/board) and then have to drive home tired. The departure thing really helps my mom after her 12 hour shifts as a nurse too so thats pretty worth it.
Car play is fun, with I had that too.
    Power seats are whatever.
The headlights everyone mentions are a fun feature.
    Tons of options available

I vote 17’ limited. Non of the nanny safety crap. As always the safety is between your ears. The limited used is the best bang for the buck. I got mines January 2020 with 45k miles for $29.5

I have a 21 and it's my first car with the radar cruise and I love it so much.

The connect subscription thing shouldn't really be much of a factor - I haven't used it at all, won't be paying for it and it sounds like it doesn't work right anyway. Is there some other issue with it I'm unaware of? It's not been intrusive at all
