The Toyota Hilux trucks with 500hp in the Dakar rally 2021 were running 245 80 16 tires, and those guys are going everywhere with those trucks.
285 does look awesome on our trucks though.

He pretty clearly stated this in his post. YES it is helpful (generally) but the small difference you're talkin
Not sure what the 17's are that you're looking at but personally I LOVE those TRD faux beadlock wheels. They're fairly desirable so unless there's a good reason to opt for 17's I'd be careful not to trade your awesome TRD wheels for some cheap or trendy aftermarket wheels or less desirable stock wheels.

hopefully you have regeared. 285/75/16 ST maxx look cool and have the volume I like, but weigh too much for a stock Tacoma drive line. I'm planning downsize. My truck drives much better with the OEM wheels and a 255/85/16. My SCS F5 and 285 ST/maxx look good on the truck, but performance suffers.

I thought the truck needed a re-gear with 315 and up? My truck now has 285/70/17 and doesn’t feel sluggish

If you are happy with the performance, don't worry about it.
My 4cy was a dog from the get go, so a re gear was one of the first things it got.

There are a lot more tire options available in 285/70/17 than there are in 285/75/16, including many in C load-range to save a little weight and ride a little softer on the highway. With 285/75/16 you'll be looking at mostly E load-range and maybe one or two options in D.

I just installed a set of SCS SR8 wheels in 17x8.5 -10 offset with Nitto Ridge Grapplers in 285/70/17 load-range C.

No big deal about the E load but rather the look of more tire is what I’m liking

Just got a '21 TRD off-road and have SCS SR8 wheels in 17x8.5 -10 offset with Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Planning on 285/70/17 and wanted to see how much power loss to expect with this size tire. How do you like that size overall?

I like the size but have noticed some power and mpg loss. Many say to re-gear but I think a re-gear should be for 35’s.

I was expecting a huge power loss going from the stock 265s to the C-load 285 Ridge Grapplers. The difference is noticeable but not as bad as I was expecting. It's been less than a week since I installed the new wheels and tires, and I've already adjusted to how the truck feels. My truck has a manual transmission so that helps.
