    Howdy, glad to be here.

I just picked up a '97 "stripper" (I think that's the term), 2.4l 5spd single cab with 93k original miles. Totally a grandpa truck, garage kept and not winter driven but used in summer to haul around a lawn tractor for a hobby job of mowing lawns in a subdivision. It has some nicks and a few bumps, and the interior needs a cleanup due to the mowing business nature of its life, but it seems well maintained with a strong clutch and fluids looking fresh and good. Best of all a nice clean frame and panels, no rust, unheard of for Michigan (even on vehicles without rust issues).

I'm no beginner when it comes to sorting out used vehicles, experienced with Japanese and European builds including past Toyotas and Nissans. However, I would certainly appreciate any advice specific to the 2.4l model with regards to potential overlooked maintenance or other preventative steps to keep this truck running well. I likely won't be driving it in the winter, this will be a 3-season truck. I do plan to tow my 26 foot swing-keel sailboat to and from the ramp so suspension advice is appreciated. Boat and trailer weigh 2200 lbs. It's flat here and I'm not worried about driving fast, but will probably add Bilsteins and heavy duty brake components up front for safety reasons.

One specific question would be whether other owners of this model have kept the 14" wheels or upgraded to something bigger. I kind of forgot 14" wheels were ever a thing outside of little Euro scooters like VW and Fiat!

Thanks in advance, it seems like a great community and I am excited to be a part of it.

I imagine most folks end up with 16" wheels just for more tire options.

Welcome! Not knowledgeable of Tacoma’s other than mine, 14 inch wheels does seem small. Sounds like a great find though!
