I've been eyeing Boise for a while and the prices there are as bad as CA right now. I live between Sac and SF right now and I couldn't afford the house I own now. But the houses around Boise are almost as bad. Would love to live in ID.

I see Knoxville mentioned a couple times already. I live in Ohio but love going down there when I can. The Smoky Mountains are awesome and so are all the car shows in Knoxville, Pigeon Forge and Bristol. If you are into cars, history and getting back to nature that area is great. Cost of living is the lowest in the country in that area as well. If I couldn't be here id be there.

I forgot I'm from Ohio. Living here isn't bad. I'm located between Akron - Youngstown and Cleveland and there is always something to do or someplace to go. You cant beat the weather here either if you can leave out 3 months of winter. Used to be everyone couldn't wait to leave here . Now I see we are becoming one of the more popular states to relocate to. Cost of living is very low compared to places like California. I visited my wifes uncle in Oceanside and he told me he paid over $700000 for his house there. Back here that house would cost you less than $200000.

Yeah, I was real estate shopping in southeast Idaho recently and it's insane...same problem the OP is trying to get away from.

High taxes (which are about to get higher) Gallon of milk costs $6+, state & county about to go bankrupt. My lot is less than 5,000 sq.ft., my house is 1,400 sq. ft. Last appraisal done about 7 years ago, valued at $750k. My neighbors can hear me fart when I'm pissing in the morning.
I am not rich, I am living on Social Security, and I WOULD NEVER MOVE.

PA can be a great state (or commonwealth as they put it) to live in, but certain townships totally nail you on property/school taxes. My county (Fulton) is super cheap as far as local and county taxes, but it's pretty out there. I have a 45 minute ride to any major store. I'm trying to locate to a neighboring county (Franklin) to be closer to work and amenities. The extra taxes are totally pricing me out of some nice homes that look cheap on paper, but the taxes totally disqualify them. It's beautiful country though! People are friendly, and the local food is great. I'm right on the border with North Central Maryland (Washington County) and it's also a very nice area that I've been looking into. I was born in the are and moved to the Deep South for 8 years. Couldn't imagine myself anywhere else after that stint.

PA was described to me by a fellow at the hotel bar in Rochester, NY. You have Philly on the East side, Pittsburgh on the West with Alabama in between. Very accurate:rofl:

yeah...our youngest just started college, so now is the time to start looking/preparing. All of the kids got "the talk" about not planning on living at home after college...and luckily, they get it. They all want to be on their own...no basement video game lifers here!!!

I have witnessed this in C-bus OH firsthand over the past 30 years. The rest of the state is losing population and we have become a "big city" now. It is not a good thing, at least to me. But I am a grumpy introvert. I liked it better when we were a cow-town...big enough to have some city type amenities, but not the crime, waste, and traffic that we have now....in my 20's and 30's, I was planning on retiring to a rural part of the state - probably north/central - but now, I want out...

we want to go to a place where people don't want to cluster to...hence colder weather destinations

I’ve been a southern California native my whole life and at 36 I’m starting to consider buying. $750k will get you a 2bd 2ba in recently gentrified, former gang heavy neighborhood in Los Angeles, so Montana and Wyoming are starting to look like a good move for me

I do think our winters have become more mild over the last 10 years. I have also heard that some apple orchard owners are moving to Michigan because of the higher temps here than in years past.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Southern Missouri -- if you like conservatism and hilly country. Southeast Mo is the exception to the hills --there it is flat as a board. Northern Mo is mosly flat with the exception of the Northwest and Northeast parts --there it is more low rolling hills, Springfield Mo is a nice big "town" -not like a city --very conservative. I am from and live in central Mo.(mostly hilly) kind of a mix being on the north edge of the Ozarks. Please don't think all Missourians are like the idiots depicted in the series "Ozark"
Of course we have the biggies -St Louis and Kansas City. Missouri's terrain is as varied as they come. We also have varied climate and a tornado here and there. Very nice lakes, rivers big and smaller fun types. Winters seem to be getting milder as everywhere else in the world. Missouri's taxes -average- cost of living -usually below average till you get in the bigger urban areas. I won't go into politics as we have our share of that kind of news lately.
    Good luck in your search!

I agree -- very nice -- however - they should show it in the mid winter setting as well -for those who don't know what a ample supply of snow looks like
