Been looking for ways to use my spare tire area for additional fuel storage. Looked at Trail'D but my goodness the price!! Got these Roto Pax as blems for almost half off and started thinking of ways to mount them. Originally I had given up and was going to mount them on my swing away; however, I had an idea for how to get them underneath...

You can barely see them up there. They are tight with no movement. Factory chain end is intact and ready for a spare. Bam! Happy as a clam.

my only concern with this method is that you'd be kicking up whatever you drive over at the cans. Pretty ingenious though.

I have a swing away that mounts in the receiver. I plan to build a bumper with a swing away soon.

That’s nice. What id do to slight improve that idea is to place them in a aluminum box to make a shell over them, leaving the top open. That will protect the packs from road debris.

Others have offered similar suggestions. Those Roto Pax are as significant as any fuel tank and somewhat pliable. my guess-and I will proudly eat my words if it doesn't work out-is that they are up enough to be shielded from most of the madness that will come off the tires. My Tig skills are not that good anyway...

The polymer scientist in me has been unimpressed by the Trail'D containers -- at least for gasoline or diesel. The Trail'D website description notes they're made from linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), which is fine. But they mention nothing about fluorination of the PE, which is the best technology for *significant* improvements in the barrier properties of polyethylene fuel containers.

That's probably why Trail'D advise changing the contents (other than water) every few months. They're careful to not mention using these for fuel, although they imply it throughout their description.

Rotopax don't specifically mention fluorination, but their description explicitly discusses polymer modifications for high barrier properties for fuel storage -- that's almost certainly what they're doing. Better technology for what you're doing IMO, @pearing.

hopefully they hold up for ya, check back in a year or so and show us some pics of the containers, curious minds want to know. I put mine on the swing out but have contemplated your idea similar to that several times. :)

I am way more worried about the weight on the swing out... Can't say why, just am. Would be more accessible there, but also for those with nefarious intent as well...
