When you connect to wifi at home do you see your neighbors wifi too?

 

Yeah, but their signal is low, but I think I see theirs as well.

 

Do you even know how to get into your routers settings? You should first try setting your router to channel 3 or 9 you may have Wi-Fi from neighbors interfering on your channel

 

No clue how to get into it... how do I go about doing that?

 

Just figured out how to get into it, but I don't see anything on there about channels.

Not sure if it has anything to do with being a Spectrum router and not an "off" brand, but didn't see anything on there, in the settings.

 

1, 6, and 11 are the only 2.4 GHz channels to use. Because 2.4 GHz has a channel width of 20 MHz, using something like 3 or 9 is bad. This explains why: https://www.metageek.com/training/resources/why-channels-1-6-11.html

Most devices will want to use the 5 GHz band at this point anyway. 5 GHz offers enough channels (and a typical home wireless router will automatically select the best channel) where it's highly unlikely to have interference issues in a home environment without a bunch of other APs broadcasting.

 

Hey guys. Has been a while since I logged on here. Hope all is well; im in the hunt to find a set of KO2's for my truck. I need to replace only two of them, as my two front ones are 3/4 new still. Any ideas on good tire shops that might have some lightly worn BFG's? Have looked around online and have called a few shops in RI with no luck. They are definitely a tough tire to find. I want to try and match the tread wear on my two front ones so they will wear evenly. Thanks!

 

I was operating under the assumption that the neighbors are on 1,6,11 already so 3 and 9 are the furthest from them..

I do not work in IT but I do dabble in computers and has since I was a kid. Now this is only my overall opinion going through different configurations over the years. I have tried to add WIFI extenders but rarely do the all work together. I really want to eventually upgrade to an ubiquiti system but I don't recommend that for new or novice users since the setup and maintenance of it can be a little confusing. Instead, I added this into my home and never looked back. It was stupidly easy to set up, and I have never experienced a drop in any of my wifi devices. It extended my range to almost go 150 feet on the property surrounding my house as well. The app is very easy and intuitive and I like the fact that I have full access control over the devices on the network like my daughters phone, tablet, and computer.

I think what I'm getting out of everyone's inputs is this:

The modem/router should be moved upstairs, to give off better signal throughout the house.
If possible, get rid of the Spectrum wireless router and get an "off brand" one which would give better signal.
Even if I stick with the Spectrum wireless router, a Wi-Fi extender isn't really needed since my house is not that big.

I think my main concern here is, or was I should say, that whatever set up I have it won't affect the performance of my android box so that my iptv streaming service works as it should. But I guess even if all of that is in tip top shape, the iptv service will only be as good as the box that I am using to watch it on, as well as the reliability of their service/server/host... I think.

I guess I'm just a perfectionist and want to make sure that everything is working properly, perfectly, and as it should.

Problem is, 3 interferes with 1 and 6 and 9 interferes with 6 and 11 due to the channel width.

I'm pretty sure my home router is on 5G 36 as well. Theoretically, the low channels should give a little more range than the high ones, though I've never experimented to see if the difference is noticeable. At work I have to use small widths to get every channel I can. Less throughput, but I need the channels to keep interference down when I have so many APs.

 

Yes, and as @TreeFortRichard said it's worth experimenting with placement. Typically, a quality well-located wireless router with external antennas shouldn't have an issue covering a raised ranch.

 

I think what I'm going to do first is work on moving my set up upstairs, and taking out the wi-fi extender. Since everything we use and run is upstairs, there won't be a need for the extender anymore.

Hoping that will "solve" what I think my issue is, and then go from there.

This is a great start. Wifi works a lot like an umbrella. The higher it is the better. The chinsy router all in one system the spectrum gives you is crap. Not to mention that wifi router generally have a overall lifespan on them. If you can get 3 years out of one you are doing really good but after about 2 years, depending on the usage, they tend to degrade. Just my opinion.

 

This is the set up they gave me, when I got the service last year.

One is a modem (I think) box, and the other is the Wi-Fi router.

 

reading all this I should go and check my setup and make sure it's actually good

I do have an extender in my laundry room for my back yard. But, I was a little surprised it would be needed based on my lot size and locations. I'll read through it all and check some stuff. But, I also won't be testing the back corner of my yard since it's 4 degrees...
