BATTERY FAILURE 3 YEARS

My 3rd Tacoma SR5 and this one has 16000 miles and is a 2018 . Out of warranty due to 36mo. Live in Northern Pa . Yesterday was 16 degrees and truck would not start . Put on charger and about one hr later started . Today it turned over but it was questionable for awhile . Reading not unusual for these initial 24F batteries to fail this soon ???? Looking for replacement recommendations . Again in Rural Pa but do have NAPA ,Autozone,Advanced Autoparts and Walmart . Truck sits outside and with pandemic might sit for 2-3 days . Not opposed to buying online

 

My OEM (2020) failed with 12 months, 10k miles on it. It was replaced under warranty but if I had to come out of pocket...I would probably go with an Interstate/Costco one.

 

Sounds like you nailed it. Weather+ non use killed it. I replaced mine on my 17 sport last week. I live in Florida so the heat, but I try to drive once a day. My battery didn't fail, but I was concerned.

these from Scamazon, for every battery I have. Most of mine sit for weeks (or longer) at a time. The NOCO works like a lucky charm.

Yep, if it’s that cold put a maintainer on it. Just remember to unplug it before you drive off.

 

Buy the cheapest battery you can find. They are all made by the same one or two companies.

 

NOCO are probably the best chargers out there IMO.

 

I have the same one. Works great for cars, boats, etc. Works with 12v (Traditional) lead-acid, AGM, and lithium batteries. You can also install a quick connector so you don't have to pop the hood every time.

 

Literally any other battery besides oem.

Planning on interstate battery from Costco when mine calls it quits. Great deal.

 

I have a pigtail for each of mine for connect/disconnect convenience. I use the ring connectors on the battery, splice in an extension, then the quick connection as the pig tail. I leave the unit on the shelf. Unplug at the pigtail and off I go.

I'm up here in northeast PA and have had similar issues with batteries. I keep a tender on those I don't use very often like my BMW Z3 and the UTV. Have used AUto Zone and Advanced Auto Parts to replace batteries without any problems.

 

The wife 2015 GX460 failed at 3 years and I put the same make battery I had in my 2006 GX470, a BatteryPlus X2. Costly, but they last.

Mine made it almost five years, never failed or left me stranded, but I replaced it because the cells were getting weak.

I got the cheapest one from Walmart, not because I’m cheap, but because of the good probability that it will last as least as long as the oem with same maintenance I gave the original.

Moreover, I put it on a trickle charge for a day and a half before putting on the vehicle.

3 years is really good for the stock battery

 

Good stuff, I just put a two pin off the battery and tucked the end in the grill. Also, had to get a couple extensions since 2.5' wasn't quite long enough.

My 2018 OEM battery is almost in the same spot as yours, the negative temps in the NE really aren’t doing it any favors. I have been researching a replacement and the duracell batteries look to be the best wet cell lead acid batteries and the batteries plus X2Power series if you’re looking for AGM.

 

When I was living in NC, where I grew up, Batteries seemed almost like they had a timer on them, as you could count on them dying at 3 years. Then, when I moved out to CA, I kept wondering when my battery was going to start the slow decline. Ever since I have been living out here in Northern California, which it doesn't freeze and it rarely gets above the 70s, batteries have lasted me 8 years, on different vehicles. So I am pretty convinced that it has to do with the weather, and it not freezing in the "winter" time here.

 

Yeah, batteries just aren't going to last as long in the cold, with infrequent use, and short trips.
I haven't driven my Tacoma in a week, and plan to make run to get beer and drive it for bit this evening. I normally take it the range once a month, as that's 110 miles round trip. I planned on replacing it at the 3 year mark,,,,. If it makes it that long.
