If you have rust starting on your roof don't ignore it. I had a little surface rust on mine so I wet sanded it decent put some ospho on it wet sanded it again and then rattle can painted it. Two weeks later the rust came back so this time I went up there with a wire wheel and started gouging out the worst spots. Mind you this is just surface rust. What I found was that in between the two outer raised ridges of the roof there is some kind of coating on the roof metal. It is pretty thick almost like a Bondo coat. I think it is semi-metallic because my roof was solidly rusted everywhere that coating was. It didn't take much to get it to good looking bare metal but the rust would have kept eating.20210131_142052_HDR.jpg
If you got a little rust up top you might want to check it out sooner than later.

seems better to do it this way than wait for it to rust deeper and have to cut out the section to weld in a new one.

Might even be easy given the side ends can be masked off to put fresh paint and it will slightly match the rest of the truck
versus doing a small spot repair in the center of a fender that's difficult to blend with everything else

Or, you could even do gloss black for style points if the truck is a different color
    like Benz

or white like an FJ cruiser for off road sun/heat rejection
that may even last longer if the paint gets less hot due to white color
