I haven't driven much since the pandemic started, until today. I filled up the tank and drove about 100 miles. When I got home I heard a noticeable chirp (definitely not the typical fuel pump chirp) and metallic rattling noise. The sound only happens while accelerating / giving it gas, both while moving and stationary. At 23k miles, does this sound serious? Sorry in advance for the frantic video.

    Pulley?

Use a old garden hose or something to nail down the source of the sound.

Definitely wouldn't let a vehicle go more than 2weeks without getting it up to operating temp if avoidable.

Drive belts do make that noise on these trucks. It's distinctly different from the fuel pump chirp.

You can give the belt a quick spritz of water and see if that affects it at all.

    Might just be really dry.

Yeah I completely mismanaged this whole WFH situation and neglected my truck for months at a time other than starting it up here and there to keep the battery alive.

The spritz of water worked made the chirping go away!

Probably something I never noticed before, but does anyone hear a puff of air when going from idle to accelerating?

Also, I just learned that gas with ethanol (only readily available gas here in CA) goes bad in as little as 3 months sigh.

Yeah that's the intake taking a big gulp of air.

Your belt was probably dusty/dirty from sitting, or it's a pulley. It may return when it dries. If that's the case, mix some simple green with water and give it a spray, then wash it decently with the hose.

For your fuel, adding some Stabil to it will fix the old gas. Just grab a small thing of it, and add it in then top off the tank. Follow directions for how much to add ofc.

And give it a good 30-45min drive. If you have 4wd, find a dirt road and put it through it's paces.

Yep, sounds like the serpentine belt is acting up. Problem once it starts, the noise will come back till its replaced. Had the issue with my tundra and shop trucks. Toyota will replace it if the trucks still in the 3 year/36k mile warranty.

Sounds like a pulley bearing. I would loosen the belt and spin them all and check which one is the rough one and replace.

There is also a TSB about chirping belts on 2016-2020 tacos. Fix is a new belt that has a rev'd part number. Per the TSB you'd be out of warranty on time, but maybe the dealer could meet you half way since you're just out of warranty and have low miles.

Is this intake gulp normal? I’ve started to notice this recently when accelerating from a stop but never noticed it before

STA-BIL won't fix old gas or anything. It's a preventative, not a remedy.

The Gulp of air is definitely noticeable. Odd that I've never noticed it before.

The chirp has gone away at least for now. I'm thinking the cause might have been from some coolant I spilled around the belt area while topping off.

Yeah once gas gets sour its history. You can install a fitch fuel catalyst product that will keep your gas performing fresh for very long periods.

I’m pretty disappointed in the fact that Toyota recognized an issue with the original drive belt by issuing a new part number replacement, but only covering it under the 36k warranty period, and then charging $70 for the belt outside of that period. They could have at least had a low cost replacement cost if you are swapping the belt out due to this issue and replacing the new belt part number for the old.

Yes, I could have purchased a less expensive after market belt. I didn’t realize there was even a part number change until after I purchased the replacement belt. More ironically I have 72k miles and this chirp started way back when I was still in warranty and I finally got tired of hearing it to the point of replacing the belt.

check the heat shields underneath. I recently tracked down a metallic rattle and found a heat shield loose.

I just took mine in for the same issue. The replacement part (90916-A2037) is apparently on back order at my local dealership but will be replaced under warranty when it comes in. Bonus: Additionally, they also replaced my battery under warranty fora “porous” battery case.
