18-22L per 100km? Damn! Ive never seen those numbers in my taco. I gotta drive pretty hard to get 15-16L per 100.

You have to remember that is pre break-in 90% city stop and go traffic in those first 2-2.5k’s No hand calculations either. However, things are much better now anecdotally.

    I understand.

I just never saw those numbers even during the break in period. I live in north surrey and drove everywhere in traffic. Downotwn, burnaby, new west, you name it.

no one is going to go any further than necessary

anyone might notice I consistently ask what type driving & environs dealt with

the bump/grind of commuter driving..................... sitting at stop lites

    the incessant slow crawl

long warm ups are NOT good for any engine

if U will notice the temp gauge rarely moves

    when idling

    at 35mph

    at hiway speeds

it will dead stick right in the middle which is pretty consistent

slow speeds + idling increases the water ( h2o ) content in the oil......... NEVER A GOOD THING

actual temps dont get high enuf to burn off a good deal of water content

thats why the ‘ taxi cab ‘ scenario its ALWAYS suggested to change oil more frequently ( water content !!!!!!!!!!! )

    b4 any1 takes a leap ( some1 will )

    1 must consider ‘ heat soak ‘....................b4 1 steps in ‘ it ‘

when the needle 1st gets to the hard on middle......................the engine is NOT at the same temp

when the needle is straight up !!!!!!! after a 80mph run

Same here, 20 mpg in the winter...23+ in the summer. Truck is all stock. I've tried to keep the tire weight as low as possible from what the stock ones weighed while running about 30 psi.

New Tacoma here getting around 18.5 (MPG). My observation has been hills have a huge effect on this vehicle, a factor where I live I can get 22 MPG going into town and 16MPG coming home. Also compared to SUVs going up long inclines kills the MPG for me more than other vehicles. (I live in the Poconos area). Also as its been said short trips do no favors, I do LOOOONG (60+ mile) commutes.

As far as engine warmup time...once it comes off high idle, i'm gone....which is less than 30 sec. no matter how cold it was.

I think yer right ... I remember back in the 90's the popular thing was to either drive with yer tailgate down, OR take it off (Less weight) and replace it with what were called 'Gator Nets' ... Basically a poly 'net' that looked like something you'd catch tuna with, stretched over where the tailgate would be. It worked so much as for if you didn't want groceries sliding out the back of the bed.
I tried both methods on a Mazda B2200 truck I owned back then. Neither of them gave me even 1 more mpg.

Yes I remember those. I did the exact same thing on my first TOYOTA truck and got the same results lmao!

The only thing it did for me is that it made the little truck look real sporty. And then as a result, it drew the attention of LEO and got a ticket for crossing the light when yellow. Then of course one day it just got stolen. Back on went the tail gate, no difference in mpg

The money you spend on extra electricity keeping your engine warm all night may offset the fuel savings. Would be worth
calculating the kWh cost of the block heater.

I've always wondered this, I'm not that far north, so not many had have, unless you're working at a firehouse. I wonder if people put them on a timer so they start to heat a few hours before they intend to drive. Neighbor across the street has one on his obtuse dually, that thing is plugged in all the time starting early Fall. It's gotta be on timer, or plugged in to the garage next door.

I did some quick math based on electricity rates in BC. It’s actually not too bad, even running 24 hours a day for a couple months. Practically, it would likely be less than this.

Assuming you are using up your Tier 1 kWH, and are bumping into Tier 2, BC hydro is presently charging $.1394 per kWH

Assuming a block heater is 500 watts running 24/hr at Tier 2 rates:

    .5kW x $.1394/kWH x 24 hours = $1.67 Cdn a day or $11.69 a week.

We have relatively inexpensive power in BC so the calculation may be less appealing elsewhere.

12 bucks a week isn't as bad as I thought it would be, you could burn way more than that in gas using the remote start.

Where I live (Cold/harsh winters) I have a few rigs but only one that has any heating devices on it. A 94' Bronco that is our plow truck.
Has a block heater and a heating pad to keep the battery warm. Only real reason is so when the wife has to leave work at 7 AM, and there's 8" of snow on our driveway (1/2 mile long) that needs shoved off to one side ... I don't have time to fiddle-fart trying to start an uncooperative engine because it's 0 degrees (F) outside. I need it to fire right up, and whatever it costs me electricity-wise is $$ well spent.
