Do you think it is worth the cost? How much better is it than a cell phone?

I did not think it would be worth it so I had let it lapse but once winter came and one morning I walked out to see my truck covered in a sheet of solid ice and then snow on top of that I decided to subscribed as not even the FOB will work without an active sub.

I also like that I can check the truck from my app.

For remote start, apparently not. You need to add a remote starter to get it back if you don’t want to pay for the service.

According to a brochure by Toyota they were suppose to "update" it so you can, however it still is not able to be used without the connected service active.

ahh gotcha - well that's really anti-consumer - remote start being offered as a subscription service? Sounds like a class action law suit.

Toyota, as far as I can tell, never calls it remote start.. they call it "Toyota Remote Connect" and all the descriptions talk about the connected experience. My dealer certainly did not call it remote start.. heck the sales person was reluctant to even mention I could do it via the key fob.. probably due to Toyota's stance on it.

Too expensive. Doesn’t each of the four connected services cost $79/yr?

I have a 2020 TRD Pro...pressed the red button and told them to unsub me and turn this service off.

Key Fob works, as does remote start. NO NEED for this service unless you want to start or monitor things from your phone on the toyota app.

They may not have completely unsubed you if remote start still works. Those on here who have let their subs expire don’t have a working remote start. Check again after your original expiration date to be sure.

The only thing about the app is what if it get hacked in some way and your vehicle could be accessed then. I just rather not have to worry about it being connected. Also I bet having it connected, Toyota would be monitoring the vehicle and records everything like your cell phone does. The only thing I would really use would be the wifi but I can go through my cell phone provider for that.

I will have to find a couple of guys that have tacomas were I work and see if the remote start works for them or not and if they have the plan.

This was a bummer for me when I read about it a while ago on here that remote start only works with a paid subscription. There are a lot of cheaper vehicles out there that include this standard. My $20,000 less renegade had it but I guess that was all it had going for it. Sure miss the heated steering wheel.

But I do love this new Tacoma anyway. I know for sure I can drive it the next 20 years easily. Quality versus quantity!

Then the service is still Active, even if your phone states it is not. It has been tested by a lot of Tacoma users, including me (2020 OR) and even when I went to the dealer they told me it would not work once the original service was expired.

If you truly have an expired service (Not one you told them to cancel, it has to expire thru the year) and it still works please let us know what you did to by pass their Connected services registration to get it working again.

Toyota monitors your vehicle information including but not limited to location regardless of active services or not, this is all part of the fine print you signed upon purchase of the vehicle. It also records, including visual via the camera, information if you get into an accident. Toyota can pull that data for court if needed. I am not even sure you could disable all of that if you tried it is ALL tied into TSS-P.

I don't want to cause problems with adding links to product but if anyone is still wanting remote start I have seen a kit that is completely plug and play. They also have a app to where you can remote start, lock/unlock, show GPS location, and many other features. It just another option if you don't want to pay the subscription.

I can't remember what I did with the 4Runner but you can do something through Toyota that will deactivate all of that. My dealer showed me the stickers and everything about the monitoring.

As a SR5 owner, I can't wait to have the conversation when they ask me why I don't want to pay for an app that only give me my mileage.
As for the accident button, what the f... How can they charge for this.

To be fair, the Remote Connected service gives more then just mileage. You can setup Guest drivers (great if you have kids) to limit Geo location, speed, etc (Valet mode also) and couple of other things. Not defending the service but it is just more then what you mentioned.

Didn't know that. Than again my oldest is 8 so I'll be fine for a few years...
