Oh, ok. I didn't think to look in the air filter location since there is an air filter in there already. Will this void any warranty or cause the engine to be less protected from dirt.

This is an emmissions filter that blocks harmful pollutions from coming back out of the engine when. The truck is turned off. As long as you don't have the cheapest air filter you can find and check it once in a while you should have no issues. HOWEVER I am not responsible for any damage and I wouldn't do it if your truck is under warranty as dealerships will try to find any way to void your warranty.

I'm running K&N so, its a good filter. If it's there to filter air "out" from the engine, then it should not harm the eng. because it doesn't filter "in" So, I guess I will be doing the mod. I bought a separate warranty not from Toyota, so chances are if anything ever happens Toyota will want the work. (Knock on wood) Rather nothing ever happen. Thanks for your help

Excellent filter choice! I recommend the mod. I get better acceleration as it's basically removing an air restriction. But mpg is unchanged for now... ECM should catch on soon. Glad to help!

I just removed mine as well. Test spin tomorrow.

On a separate note: I notices a small pool of red vicious substance on the garage floor this morning, this liquid had pooled up in the skid plate on the passenger side. needless to say , I was a bit (a lot) alarmed, with only 400 miles on the odometer, I was not happy. Just as I was going to call Toyota Care and have my new truck towed to the dealership, I decided to wait a day and ask my friend the wench turner what he thought. Then I saw this thread and decided to get rid of the secondary charcoal filter. That is when I discovered the source of the mystery red goo. You see the day before I bought and installed a K&N filter.... It was the residual oil from the filter that pooled up in the air box and came out the drain and made its way to my garage floor via the skid plate. So thanks to all for this thread. Not only will my V6 breath better! but you saved me the embarrassment of having the truck towed to the dealership only to find out that is was the filter that I installed.

I made this mod to my 4-cyl truck just two days ago (6/17/21) and then took a short trip down I-10 and back in NW Florida through a section that I've done many times and have monitored the 'Eco' bar graph showing minute-by-minute mileage. Now...let me tell you....I'm an old retired engineer that keeps a log of all the gas into the truck and what the MPG is for each fillup. I was amazed at the changes in the behavior of the truck as I went UP/DOWN the hills along the highway. First...it didn't downshift as aggressively when I went up a hill with the cruise engaged. Also, the sound was much smoother and quiet...not that 'growl' that I was used to hearing. Lastly, the ups and downs of the bar graph was much shallower as it was getting better mileage on both the uphills and downhills. I got 26+ mpg over a 140 mile trip and usually I was lucky to get 24.5. I'm a fan of this mod!

I'd say give it a shot. (Does your 1998 even have the secondary filter?) It would make sense that your 2.4 would get some benefit from some added intake flow. Report back with the results!

    After checked and reviewed,
    the 1998 Toyota Tacoma 2WD 4 cylinders 2.4l doesn't have a secondary filter.

    You are right RDCOWAN

    Thank you.

Real simple, hose clamp off, carful drilling of the plastic welded rivet, popped right out.. Any difference drive wise, not that I can tell.

I've gotten a lot of great information from this site and I think I can add something to this mod (hopefully).

I just did the 2nd filter delete and, instead of drilling out the rivets, I took a box knife and cut the filter out along the edges. This allowed me to lift at the rivets and they snapped (pretty clean for the most part) off. I took some dykes and cleaned the ones that needed it. Made it a 5min job (including wrapping the intake so no debris got in the engine).

Thanks for everyone on this site for posting either great information or some good humor.

Can’t go wrong switching the mobile one synthetic there’s a high mileage version for vehicles over 75,000 miles as well. I saw a slight mpg improve on my 2015 Tacoma, as well as my 95 F150.
