What gear oil are you guys using for your diffs and transfer case? I had the dealer quoted me for the transfer case and its was $120 a liter and you’ll need 1.5L. Diffs was $85/L. What’s the alternative?

I used 1l of the 75w toyota stuff. It listed for 50 or 60 a litre, but was able to smooth talk the price down to 30 something. You only need one litre. Also... My tcase didn't even take the whole can before spilling out the top, maybe 95% or so.

Parts dudes said 75-85 or 90 is fine, and that their own techs don't use toyotas diff fluid as it's stupidly priced. They use redline or lucas. Ideally you just want the right weight, and GL5 rating.

I went with Lucas synthetic 75-85.

    Ok. Seriously......

FWIW, take the debris sample to the Toyota dealer. Talk to them about how you discovered the debris. Show your pictures. Have the Service Mgr make a record of the discovery matched with your VIN. Ask them about mitigation. Follow their instructions. Take these steps to set ground work for warranty if needed in the future.

I suspect Toyota will do nothing because your not having a problem. Although, you may have discovered a developing problem. This is why you want this in the service records of the truck. If Toyota does not offer any mitigation instructions, then I'd plan on another fluid change in 5000 miles. A few quarts of lube is less expensive than a diff failure.

I doubt if this left over from poor cleaning post machining at the factory. Maybe it is, maybe its a part beginning to fail.

I would fill it , drive a bit then drain it again. I would do it a couple of times...that should give a good indication if any crap is still there.

I think this is an excellent idea. Get it on record with Toyota.

Did mine a few weeks ago. Old fluid still had a decent color to it. Not large visible debris and minimal build up on the magnet.

Here is a quick blurb I did on mine when I changed them at 40k miles:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/help-determine-amount-of-diff-oil.582155/page-2#post-19362751

It was $100 for both diffs and the transfer case. Absolutely not buying fluids for $120 a liter.

As for this post, the drain plug did exactly what it was designed to do.

    Agreed.
To me, it looks like leftover bits from machining and luckily not gear or bearing chips. I’d get it documented with the dealer first (and maybe get some free or discounted gear fluid) then get a magnet on a stick and swish it around inside the bottom of the diff at each fluid change too.

As mentioned by a few people, this is the route I will go. Easy enough to do and should there be an issue it will get taken care of.

I'm honestly not too worried about after learning it's common, and that it is machining debris. Before learning that... Yeah, kinda spooky to find large bits in the first diff change haha.

As for the magnet idea... I have a large welding magnet that I used to coax the remainder pieces out lol.

Also it drives just fine, quite smooth to be honest. Going to do a once over tonight to ensure everything is sealed and call it good

Found similar in mine at 1000 miles when I did the first fluid swap. This is why I do break in fluid changes.

    Those prices are ridiculous. :duh:

If you change fluids every 30K, Lucas Dino $6 a quart.
