As Dan was trying to explain, its a bolt pass through with a dust cover. You could do that but it requires a different nut so more things to carry.


And yes, you'd just be relying on the C clip. It's a enough, have to use a pry bar to pop it out as it is. It'll stay in there and the seal will be on the shaft just as normal. It'll get you home for sure.

 

When I broke an ADD axle it broke at the outer joint. I was able to just cut the boots and pull the shaft out and leave the stub ends in. Quickest and easiest way if you don't want to swap.

Spindle is the same, it’s the hub design that’s different

 

just take an old CV apart. Keep the ends. Don't haul the shaft and bearings and such. That's pretty much it. You can if you want too cut the cups down so they are smaller since nothing goes in there as you removed the axle.

No. Outers are 1 spline more than ours. Has to be a 1st gen tacoma or tundra or 3rd gen 4runner.

And we just ahd to cut the boot. The pull it apart. Then remove the end c clip and be done haha

Realistically the thing that is in my OSK is from when I grenaded my spiders, and is basically used to take the front diffs rotation out of the equation. With the ADD unlocked the passenger side won't spin and the drivers side needs this setup installed:




Theoretically you can use this method to avoid changing an axle that broke IF the axle broke close enough to the hub. The only way I know of to make this is by cutting it though, as I think there are no c clips on this side, everything is pressed together for the big ass bearings on the shaft.

But if you wanted to cut it on the trail to not bother changing a CV it's more difficult than you think. First you need to carry an angle grinder, which most people don't (except my friends do because we are retarded and break stuff). Second you might be able to get in there enough to shorten the shaft but not enough to not get it to hit shit and violently attacking your shocks with a floppy shaft. We learned this on Moab Rim when @HolyHandGrenade snapped his CV and he cut it enough to get the truck to move to a better spot to change it, it flung around at slow speeds. Leaving it on there for high speed use is unwise.

Second gen, but still. So this leaves you at needing to at the very minimum remove the 4 lower bj bolts to get a close enough cut. Well at that point you are half way to a cv change, so just put on your spare. If you don't have a spare, then cutting it can for sure work, but how silly are you for carrying an angle grinder and not a spare cv?

Yeah not sure where you are getting the c clip part from @Blackdawg? There is a c clip but on the tulip. If the boots off the tulip just pulls out of the tulip receiver so no needing to fuck with a c clip. Unless you are talking about on the bearing and cage side, which I still am unsure if there is one there after rebuilding a couple, I just assumed that shit was pressed on there ha.
