    Not bumping to start the haggling but I am just started reading the manual for “my” new Tacoma (I don’t actually have it yet, but I am so excited I am pre reading the manual!!) And first page was the statement about the information they gather on your vehicle while you are using it. I am driving a car from Y2K, so needless to say, I have rolled out from under a rock here and was like dyaaamn :) :).

    Is there a fuse on the transmitter than can be pulled?

    I think the manual says part can be turned off, but diagnostic recording cannot be turned off and can be accessed by toyota or law enforcement in cases of accident or lawsuit etc.

    So I know I’m resurrecting a months old thread, and people have differing opinions on this.
    I’m not here to debate, only to say that I’m in the boat of not wanting this in my vehicles.
    Much like a giant lift may appeal to some but does not appeal to others. This is a feature I’d rather defeat/disable/remove, if I can.

    With that said here is the info I’ve been able to gather from various sources..
    Just to update everyone, the DCM does much more than just gather data..
    C99EB3B1-DF0A-46D1-901C-A83287EAA84E.jpg
    It’s located here in our trucks (MY19/20+ only)
    F7124E17-2D67-4C99-918A-77240845161D.jpg
    There is a fuse that can be pulled;
    563E503A-503F-4C12-B5DF-DBBD7EC36A61.jpg
    It’ll look like this on the screen;
    A5F683E8-DF7B-46E3-8D90-6D1B469B2047.jpg

    The DCM unit does have a battery attached to it;
    7C0B2C20-2FDC-4FFC-83A6-893A280798BD.jpg so it may still show that it is transmitting data for a bit until that battery is dead.
    This is done so that the SOS system can still be used in the case of an accident that wipes out the entire engine bay. I’m not sure how long it takes for the battery to die, but mine seemed to be completely dead from the time I pulled the fuse [greyed out DCM on screen no green light at SOS button].

    Now this is the issue; The mic runs through the DCM. So by pulling the fuse, you loose the mic for bluetooth/carplay.
    Everything else works fine and as it should from my few days of running around with the fuse pulled out.

    So far, that’s as far as I’ve got.
    I’m hoping that maybe someone with more knowledge or research could maybe speak to this, but I think the only remaining question is if there is a way to bypass the DCM to be able to use the mic again.

    credit to @caribe makaira for some schematics and @nwlinux for the fuse pull

    When I bought my '21 Taco, I didn't realize Toyota was doing this collection. My "Toyota" app scores my driving (harsh braking/fast acceleration/harsh cornering) and shows maps of exactly where I've been. While my driving isn't as bad as my truck thinks, it makes me wonder when warranty claims will be denied due to my 'driving' characteristics, or when insurance companies get involved and now I'm liable for some accident because my truck says so? The remote start through the apps is sort of nice, but I would be glad to do without it for some privacy. The "recent trips" has an option to "opt out" which I will probably end up doing soon, but I think it's only opting me out from receiving the summaries; it still gets to the Toyota mother ship.

    Thanks for posting how to disable the DCM; I'll definitely be looking more into that when my warranty is done.

    Pulling the fuse is a great idea to disable unwanted data transmissions but unfortunately the Bluetooth connection is about the only thing useful about the head unit so thats got to stay.

    Now I haven't opted into any Connected Services or even downloaded the Entune Apps but Toyota's manual advises that "When you buy a vehicle equipped with Connected Vehicle Services, data collection is active. You may deactivate Connected Vehicle Services at any time by contacting us and we will no longer collect your Personal Information and Vehicle Data."

    I called Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 and requested that they do not track my vehicle or collect my personal information. A gentlemen with an Indian accent on the other line checked my VIN# and told me that I have not opted into any Connected Services so Toyota is not collecting my data....yet the DCM signal meter is active on the head unit and the Safety Connect Button is green.

    Press the SOS and connect to someone from there. You have to tell them that you want to opt out of the SOS service and say that you don’t want them collecting your data as the reason for it. I was told it could take 24hrs for the light to turn off.

    The data will always be collected as long as the DCM is connected. You’d have to be naive to think otherwise. Whether or not they’re actually compiling your specific data and using it, only Toyota knows the answer to that.
    I just assume they are and the only way to really do anything about that is eliminating the DCM, whether taking it out completely and putting in an aftermarket system, or pulling the fuse.

    This discussion on data privacy is relevant now more than ever. A recently released Motherboard article details how these systems in new vehicles expose us to live real-time tracking of the vehicle.

    https://www.vice.com/en/article/k7adn9/car-location-data-telematics-us-military-ulysses-group

    The right to privacy should exist not only from the government, but from private companies as well. A reasonable person would interpret that purchase of vehicle does not constitute a waiver to their privacy. Regardless if the sale of the vehicle includes any disclosure stating that sensitive information will be transmitted, regardless if the system provides a method for opting out, the technology is being installed in the vehicle and it's purpose is to spy on you. Opting out alone does not guarantee 100% mitigation of security risks.

    Surely no reasonable consumer expects for their car to spy on them.

    I would add that it shouldn't be reasonable to assume that a product you buy spies on you. It's absurd, but somehow we've become indoctrinated to think it's normal.

    Watch how quickly this thread gets buried under the sea of “wHaT SiZE TirE caN i Fit” - “WHaT aBoUT yoUR CeLl PHonE” - and just general disinterest.

    Tech becomes smarter. Humans become dumber/content with their conveniences. “Oh look the car has wifi! I need it for camping and watching netflix!”

    To the point where the people who want to fight against it have been labelled and cast as the crazy tin foil hat crowd. Ah well *shrug*
    My fuse remains plugged in.

    Seems that’s generally how things are in society now. If you question anything you will be ostracized. Sit down, shut up and take it.

    Funny how Toyota (and other auto mfgs) bury the extent of how they track customers in a sea of disclaimers, end user agreements, privacy policies and vague explanations of what, how and why data is collected. Most drivers aren't technical enough to really understand what's going on or how the data is or could be used and Toyota ensures that their data collection is completely transparent to all. If customers can't see it, they won't complain about it.
