Salesman talked me into getting one for my off-road and about a week later I cancelled it because it's a Toyota. If it doesn't break in the first 2 years, then you're good to go in my opinion.

    Try
    https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/where-to-get-good-deals-on-toyota-factory-extended-warranty.904794/

Or diff dealers, talk to finance agent, and make offer.

Be sure it is with Toyota, offer less than half his asking price.

You're buying a Tacoma because it's bulletproof. The quality is already built into the price. Extended warranty is a waste IMO.

For me, I'm not concerned about the powertrain, that may indeed be "bulletproof". I'm more concerned about the electronics: computers, modules, head unit, etc.

I get it - and I feel the same. But take a look at how many vehicles (4Runner, Tundra, Tacoma) are still for sale with 200-300K and those electronics still working!

My dad has a FJC with 275K. Nothing stopped working.

Plus... $1200 in repairs? A LOT has to have gone wrong for that to be the bill, BEFORE you factor in deductible.

Yea, I get that too. My luck, if I don't get it, something will break. I guess that's what insurance is all about, peace of mind.

I have a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 160K miles on it. Everything on that truck (including all electronics) still work like they did when it was new. Some have said they buy warranties for peace of mind; cannot fault them for that as some folks are just wired to be more risk averse. I on the other hand don't mind rolling the dice when the odds are in my favor.

To quote someone who was being pitched an extended warranty by a salesman... "If I need the extended warranty, then I'm probably buying the wrong truck."

    I wouldn't get it.

Just bought my 2020 Taco 3 months ago.

After a lengthy, hand drawn example on paper by the finance guy about the benefits of Toyotacare I said no it’s a Toyota.

However, it’s all a calculated risk.

I have never purchased an extended warranty. My brand new new 1989 Ford Ranger developed valve cover gasket leak, fixed under warranty. Then it developed a rear main oil leak just after 2 years and not covered under warranty. Traded it in for a Brand new 1992 Toyota v6 4X4. No extended warranty. Head gaskets blew under warranty. They went again out of warranty. Toyota and the dealership repaired no charge as good will. Drove it for 14 years with no other issues. Sold it in 2006 to buy a used 2003 3 year old Pathfinder. No extended warranty, throttle body went after year of ownership. Replaced for $1k. Drove it for 14 years as well with no other issues.

I keep my vehicles a long time and make sure to keep them maintained. If any vehicle is suffering from unusually high repairs I’ll dump it and move on within reason.

If my new 2020 has some sort of inherent design flaw or was unlucky to get a lemon I’d dump it and move on.

However I don’t anticipate that with this truck. If I had bought a domestic or first model year of something I'd probably consider an extended warranty.

    I like this guys advise.

The salesman gets a commission for selling the truck, not the warranty.

The "finance" guy is still a salesman. And I'd bet he gets commission off that extended warranty.

I got it for my piece of mind on my first Toyota. If it knew how reliable it would be so far I probably wouldn’t have purchased the extended warranty.

I got one with my 2021.

Already automatically included 10yr/200k powertrain via the dealership(and well known for standing behind it as they carry multiple brands).

Bought extended warranty, 8yr 75k everything except maintenance items, brake pads etc. Was funny cause through his entire speech I zoned out off in LA LA land wanting to get out to my truck. He realized I was spacing off. Once he shut up, I told him exactly what I wanted and that if I didn't like the price or going to be an issue I'd call my bank.

I'm a mechanic by trade, tired of spending my off time fixing my own crap. One thing when tinkering or upgrading, another thing getting way late or staying up all night to get a vehicle back on the road cause we need it. So for the next 8yrs, anything goes wrong, it's someone else's problem (or I get paid during work hours to fix it)
