90 octane ethanol free. I get very good mileage when I use it year round. Yes, to me, it's worth the extra money especially when I get 2 -3 miles to the gallon more compared to what many write here claiming what they get in terms of lower MPG. When I travel long distances on highway trips and have to use 89 for fill ups, my mileage drops.

My 2016's manual says to use Top tier 87 octane. I figured out what to use in my truck.

    What Is Top-Tier Gas?

"Most people tend to look at fuel prices first when they choose a gas station for a fill-up. Or drivers simply go to the station that's most convenient at the time. However, some automakers and plenty of experts recommend filling at stations that sell top-tier gas.

It's commonly believed that all brands of gas are more or less the same. This is partially true. All gas is refined in the same way and it comes from crude oil. Gas in the U.S. is required to include certain additives to keep engines clean.

However, the top-tier gas brands do more than just the minimum requirements set by the EPA. Top-tier gas meets the more stringent standards set by some of the top automakers. It's a trademarked name that is derived from a program started in 2004. It was then that several automakers were concerned that EPA standards weren't strong enough to protect their new high-tech engines. Top-tier gas uses a number of approved additives to reduce engine deposits and sticky valves."

    What Does Top-Tier Gas Do?

"According to the organization behind top-tier gas, the enhanced fuel helps reduce harmful deposits on an engine's fuel injectors, intake valves and combustion chamber. These deposits are caused by fuel that doesn't burn.

Top-tier gas can also clean engines that previously used non-top tier fuel. Due to its cleaning power and more efficient makeup, top-tier gas can both increase fuel economy and improve emissions."

    How Does Top-Tier Gas Work?

Research from AAA showed that the average engine using top-tier fuel has 19 times fewer deposits on its intake valves versus those on an engine that's been using regular fuel. The AAA study also showed that using regular fuel can eventually reduce fuel economy by as much as four percent.

Deposits from unburned fuel can also cause drivability issues. Some symptoms include:

    • Rough idle
    • Hesitation or stumbling
    • Engine knock
    • Reduced fuel economy"

I've tried premium fuels rated higher than E89 in my 2020 v6....Seems E87 here performs best. I lose some performance, and fuel economy with the higher octane fuels.

What is 85 octane, and is it safe to use in my vehicle?
The sale of 85 octane fuel was originally allowed in high-elevation regions—where the barometric pressure is lower—because it was cheaper and because most carbureted engines tolerated it fairly well. This is not true for modern gasoline engines. So, unless you have an older vehicle with a carbureted engine, you should use the manufacturer-recommended fuel for your vehicle, even where 85 octane fuel is available.

    https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/octane.shtml

This website is administered by Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. DOE and the U.S. EPA. It is what made me stop running 85 in Colorado.

Use what the manual say's. Don't deviate from the octane in the manual especially under warranty. Avoid more than 10% ethanol if you can.

    Careful....don't get confused.

The pump Octane number is typically an average of the Research Octane and the Method Octane ratings. You'll see it on the pump sticker as (R+M)/2.

    Burn the 85 or 87.

I'm in the MidWest, don't know the elevation, burning E10. Its "Octane" number is 87 based on the pump sticker.

Yep, I've proved it more than once in my taco.
Pumps here only claim they have E10 fuels. I even wonder at times we have more than 10% ethanol in our blends. You smell our gasoline, and a strong odor of ethanol will dominate the normal smell of gasoline.

The dude proves top-tier gas cleans better and is better and then recommends to run the cheaper gas with a fuel additive, huh. Now why don’t the TOYOTA engineers recommend that?

But what he fails to mention is how damaging the effects of abrasive chemicals in the fuel additives can be to the fuel pump(s) and fuel system components if not administered in the properly measured doses.

And of course adding the exact proper doses is easy peaches, so no worries right? Oh, less we take into account that even cheap fuel already has some chemicals too.

Good fuel additive advertisement though. Keep on trucking baby
