Has anyone come up with a way to mount the snorkel to the A pillar without a permit modification? Something like a magnet, or clamp? I have a spare fender I plan on using for my snorkel. I would prefer to not drill into the a pillar...

 

It probably wouldn’t hold once you take it off road. All the shakes and vibrations wouldn’t hold it in place.

I would suggest when you mount it with screws you use a rubber pad in between to help it from coming lose.

I’ve had mine on for 2 years now and it still holding well, nothing lose. Definitely a must if you take off your wheel well liners.

 

I know a couple people that have just skipped the A-pillar step entirely, not with a 1st gen though (2nd gens). They claimed it was OK but I feel like it might start getting wobbly on the highway.

They way mine is I can't see a magnet or any kind of adhesive being strong enough to keep it in place. Just use the rivets, if for whatever reason you have to take it off it wouldn't be hard to patch three small holes.

 

So I said I was going to update this tread on how well the prefilter does in filtering snow out of the snorkel.

This was a solid 75 miles of my drive today, cruising around 50mph. It got to the point of white out a few times. Blowing snow, following trucks, climbing passes at 3k rpm for 15 miles, and so on.
With the old snorkel head it would have sucked up a ton of snow and eventually clogged the tube or flooded the air box.
Here is the amount of snow the prefilter collected during the drive. Keep in mind because it sucks in air from the bottom it already reduces the amount of snow significantly.

It easily was tapped out and even if it melted it would have just remained in the containment area.
To me it appears to be a win! At least for those who drive through snow storms on the regular.

Mud flaps for the win! Too bad I'm missing the most important one... If anyone had a front driver side mudflap they don't want, let me know.

 

I used some 2 part epoxy made for holding on body panels. It’s a tan color, JB Weld I think. I attached the L shaped bracket to the snorkel and buffed the area where it would sit. Mixed and applied the epoxy after it began to harden slightly and then used a long rope and made a loop through the cab and across the windshield to hold the snorkel in place while it cured. This lasted maybe a year before the bracket popped loose. The epoxy is still holding tight on the pillar so I’ll try again and make sure to have some squish up through the bolt holes and mushroom out some this time.

 

I always just turned the head to the side or backwards in snow storms, or driving through thick evergreens, never had a problem with snow getting in there.

 

I'm digging the mushroom design Sy-klone style I'm finding online. It seems to use the same trick these clear ones (dust bowl) use but also the trick the original head uses to force out water, but in this case also particulate- looks to be self cleaning. I also like that is plain black so matches the rest of the setup.

Same principle to separate the dust and particulates. I bought a couple of these several years ago and mounted them to 5 gallon bucket lids with a squirt of silicone to seal. They’ll deposit just about everything into the bucket and save your shop vac filter for the really fine flour-like dust.

Did a little more research, the legit SyKlone models are really expensive compared to all of the other options we have. Best I found was this site that currently has "Black Friday" pricing.

I do really like the idea of it- low maintenance and black plastic (doesn't look like a bug cage or fish aquarium up there).

$200 is a bit too rich for my blood though. But would trust it over a FleaBay chinga at $100. SyKlone is used on farming and mining heavy equipment.

 

Could the body panel advice failed from UV?

I used a lot of adhesives and epoxies in my camper build.

If an adhesive or epoxy failed it’s because the prep wasn’t correct or the product used was incorrect. Done right it’s possible to adhere the snorkel on and it’ll last a very long time with no holes.

I would think epoxy might be a little rigid and the bond would fail due to its lack of flex. The same for most construction adhesives like loctite PL8X...crazy strong stuff but it’s rigid.

I bet something like 3M marine 5200 would work well. I used a lot of that and I’ve had to remove it twice. It was a giant pain to remove. It’s really strong, UV stable and has just a little flex.

Also check out SikaFlex. I don’t remember which one but I recall from my research it’s an excellent adhesive.

 

The epoxy I used did get extremely hard/brittle. I sanded the backside of the 'L' plate but it just wasn't enough to hold on. The snorkel is maybe 1/4" away from the pillar when static so it was holding it over already and then add in the bouncing it received in normal driving let alone my driving it was a matter of time before it popped loose.

 

If there were a way to get some fiberglass cloth into the mix it would never come apart.
Chopped strand mat would work even better but you can’t use US made chopped strand mat with epoxy.
You can only use it with poly.
European chopped strand can be used with epoxy or poly though.
Or maybe thicken the epoxy with fiberglass fibers or fumed silica like cabosil.
My camper stairs are held together with cabosil thickened epoxy and encased in total boat 2:1 marine epoxy.
you could leave those stairs floating in the ocean for years and they’ll be fine.

Also Epoxy fiberglass is 20% stronger than polyester fiberglass.

 

We finally got around to putting one on my sons T4R been hoarding if for a few months. His came with stickers for the head too which is cool otherwise it was exactly the same. I think i got his for 120 .
