Shit if most people read the owner's manual they'd find out their "off roading / over-landing" lifestyle is considered extreme conditions and they would change their oil more often. Instead they go for light duty I only drive this to church which happens to be Costco on Sunday 10k interval because they paid Blackstone labs to tell them their trucks cholesterol levels are good. This will be the only lab work that Steve gets this year because despite having health insurance, he pisses in starts and stops, his bung hole is itchy and is so winded he needs that a pillar handle on the driver side. He's already got on his Sunday finest and has grub hub on speed dial to deliver those wings from BWW or BWR for the big game. When the game is over he'll tell us all about how he got one over on the wings place because he had a coupon. It will be at 3AM that the shits will kick in from all the wings and bud light, because the bud light is the best he can do on his budget and diet plan. At 5AM he's calling out sick to work, but not before checking the company portal to see how many sick hours he has, by now his asshole is fully inflamed like his liver.

What's wrong with the cross? A proper rotation involves that, no matter what the manual says. I agree about the inflation though. My dealership has also been overinflating mine. It's nothing to let the air out though.

I question why cross rotation is not recommended? They are not directional tires and you're going to end up with uneven wear if you're doing a lot of highway driving (exit ramps) I'm a firm supporter of fronts to back, backs cross to front...

No, you won’t end up with uneven wear. Unless your vehicle is badly out of alignment or some other anomaly. I know, I just ditched my previous tire set warranted for 50k and I got 60k with some 8-10k life left on them. I only did tire rotation and inflation with original factory wheel alignment

For real, customers like OP make techs *hate* life, yeah there's some bad techs out there but most are honest and just trying to make a living and you can trust their experience more than a bean counter engineer writing the OM.

I guarantee the reason the OM says to only rotate front to back and not to cross is for legal reasons, for instance if the owner installs directional tires, crossing them up could lead to severe hydroplaning.

If you have non directional tires crossing the fronts to the back and moving the rears straight up is the way to go.

Freaking turd-genners with more money than brains. I get it you are proud of something you paid to much for and maybe you're trying to protect your investment but damn RELAX my dude.

I guarantee if you pull that B.S. with the wrong tech they will relocate a gremlin into your truck you will never be rid of.

Don't worry only a matter of time until OP finds out what else the tech rotated.

Like the drive shaft bolts for instance.

There was a time back in the day a local toyota dealership failed to diagnose a problem in a 93 4wd pickup i owned that was still in warranty. I had there 3 times for the same issue of a stumbling engine. They claimed toyota only allows them 20 minutes maximum to find the issue, or they don't get reimbursed any more for their time. I just couldn't believe it, and i took my truck to a friend in another city that was the service of a large jeep dealership at the time. They located the issue as a faulty egr valve in a matter of minutes. I ended up giving the toyota service dept. a bad mark when they sent me a survey. Boy did i hurt their feelings, probably with the help from others with bad experiences there, but at least it must of had some effect as they have top notch asa mechanics now.

Yeah, how dare a guy take his truck in and expect the dealership service his truck the way the manufacturer recommends.

Does it matter, probably not much. Telling me "we always do it this way" is not going to fly though. Same dealer wings it with tranny or brake fluid flushes, TW loses its mind.

In the early days of steel belted radial tires there was a fear of belt failure when cross rotating due to the tire turning the opposite direction. I don't know if manufacturers were initially responsible for this information or it was a theory passed from mechanic to mechanic until it became common practice.

What we did back in the day:
    Bias ply: cross
    Radial: front to back
Obviously there were no directional tires on common vehicles back then.

That said I have never seen any tire fail due to changing direction.

back in the day...like several decades ago...(this is what a suspension instructor told me anyway) tires were made more poorly so not crossing could lead to separation as the heat of normal use would cause changes in the rubber so crossing kept the tires from doing that and so it became a habit. It's not that it's bad to cross rotate it's just that it's not needed anymore. Obviously directional tires are an exception.

If you're vehicle is aligned properly you won't see any difference between left/right tires on wear...well if you have an open diff you will on drive wheels of course, peg leg burnouts and all. But naturally drive wheels will wear faster than non-drive wheels. Rotating really only does one thing, makes you buy 4 tires each time instead of just 2 at a time. Granted the time interval of buying 2 is sooner than doing a front to back rotate regularly and buying 4 but I prefer the financial hit of 2 tires at a time to 4...in the long run you're spending the same amount over the same period but 2 at a time is spaced out instead of BAM 4 at once.

Another exception being if your vehicle doesn't get driven much the tires could expire before the tread wears...yes tires can expire and old tires are dangerous.
