At That speed,it looks likes it hit square in the receiver your should be fine on the frame .I would be more concerned about the trans. Keep a feel on it when you drive for slippage. Personally I would have called the cops .normally I wouldn’t but my luck is horrible and somehow i know down the road I would have been f-ed

 

Yes because driving while high with expired car insurance (and possibly license) is all of sudden safe for everyone now around her because of this 20 minute interaction where she got zero repercussions with a complete stranger.

So no video of the incident, OP word against hers, OP not calling the police and filing a report, she having another “witness” in her car while OP doesn’t have one, and OP not giving her his information even though she gave him hers..... guess how this story could be easily spun?

I’m all for being empathetic, but you gotta be smart about it, and at least protect yourself.

You *may* be ok because the truck moved, dispersing the energy. However, an under the truck check is the only way to know.

Your frame will be fine. That hitch and mount to the frame get a much harder workout pulling a 6,500 lb trailer which it’s rated for.

 

....as they drove away under the influence. I did some stupid stuff as a teenager, but I have 0 tolerance for DUI. They could have driven away and killed a mom and her child.

The best way to teach a lesson is not by leniency, but by nature. The Laws exist for a reason, doesn't matter if we agree with the law or not.

I think every state in the Union requires proof of insurance and valid driver's license. Weed is a variable thing, but Driving Under the Influence is not specific as to the chemical causing the Influence.

Based on what you over-heard from the phone conversation, the girl has a habit of problems and ignorant decisions.

 

There's zero frame damage to your truck but I disagree with you not calling the police to file a report the proper way. There was no lesson learned by the other driver and they likely will be continuing smoking weed or whatever drugs they do without remorse. What if the next accident they cause will result in lost lives of an innocent family?

 

Stupid is as stupid does. Not calling the cops was stupid. The lesson you taught her was you can hit a car, drive high and there is no consequence. Sitting a couple nights in jail, losing your license etc. Is a lesson learned.

Expired insurance, possibly license, and smoking weed in the car. Definitely was their time to learn a lesson, should've called the cops for the safety of others on the road.

 

A lot of jurisdictions won't roll a unit to an accident unless there are injuries.

Devil's advocate here - the driver was sober, had a valid license and valid insurance (albeit not immediately on hand). A little accident like backing into a car doesn't need to involve the police at all.

How does a lay person know the driver was sober?
How does someone know the DL requirements in every state?
She produced an expired Insurance, why believe different?

Proof of insurance is required to be in the vehicle, not in some far away place with a phone call as "proof of insurance."

IMHO, this needed the police to at least generate a report. Other actions, need to be the responsibility of the police.

 

Anyone saying you should have called the cops doesn't live in CA. They won't bother if no one is hurt. They'll tell you to take it up with insurance.

Your truck is probably fine. Someone hit my hitch once, and the tow ball I keep on there for just these moments took off their bumper. I basically had no damage.

 

Let’s say this is your daughter driving. She’s sober but her moron friend pulled out the bong. Then she backs into someone in a parking lot which happens to thousands of sober people a day.

The police are called, she is charged and ends up with a criminal record, she can’t get a government job anymore and is denied trying to cross the border into Canada or Mexico to be with her fiancé.
