it might be. From what I’ve read some people have had the controllers stay on when the truck is off. I’m going to use it first and if it works, it works. If not I’ll just run the hot to a switch on the left of the steering wheel. Primarily though I don’t foresee me accidentally leaving it on. I’ll either have it plugged in for a road trip, sleeping in the cab so I won’t want to listen to the truckers all night at stops anyway, or wheeling only in which case I’ll plug it in for the trip and then unplug it when I’m done.

i am thinking I’ll want to do a switch on always on power rather than keyed if the trailer controller isn’t keyed. That way I can intentionally use it with the truck off if I need to sometime.

yeah you got it all. I’m doing a 3 ft antenna so it’s small. Nothing ridiculous but I know the ones that they’re talking about. Those are for sure the best and will get you the best range though.

    still used

ham is a lot quieter than cb. 146.520 is pretty quiet, and unless you plan your route ahead of time for which repeaters to hit, it’s pretty quiet still. It’s not like cb with 40 channels, you have to know the repeater offset and tone, and not all are just plain analog FM, etc.

CB is by far better for quick and easy to use especially on the road. Frs or gmrs would be better but, not standardized.

and most important of all - if the group you’re wheeling with is using CB, all the best VHF radios in the world just won’t work.

I’m doing it for road trips and wheeling. I spent more on the radio than I wanted but this will save me from having to mount anything or external speakers. All said and done I’m in for 300 with the radio and antenna and everything. I could do it for closer to 200, I spent 130 on the radio when I could get one for 30. I just want something I can hide and not have to mount.

So, yeah it’s definitely useable, more than Ham (I have my tech license and will have my baofeng handy with me too), weather is nice, but the absolute most important thing is for off roading - I’ve been on two trips where the main comms were cb and I was with them with no way to know what was going on etc. that is one reason I’m doing a single antenna instead of two, as well. Would be better for road trips to do two mounted in the hood ditch brackets for road trips but then it’s really a dedicated system.

a hand held CB is like 100 anyway and the reception is crap. So, in my mind it’s worth it.

I was a CB honk (80-90's) and later a ham operator until I let my license lapse .. (KD6SKA) ...
Back it the day we did the whole thing of having the Cobra Grant that was 'Tweeked & Freqed' (Back when they had the good ol' 8817 chip that you could 'mod' to get another 40 channels +-) under the dash, along with a good 'foot heater' and all that. Back when there was actually room for such thing.
The stuff you say was true, back in the day. But that was when everyone else had CB radios. If nobody else has them anymore, pretty much useless. Used to be good for 'Smokie Alerts' and all that, but I've found a quality radar detector to be way much better. And since I'm a geezer now, I rarely ever speed, as I'm really never in a hurry .. LOL!
Used to be big-time into 2 meter. Had a nice Kenwood (100 watt) rig with a directional dual Yagi and used to enjoy 'node-hopping' between repeaters. Lived in So. Cal back then and actually got to Anchorage Alaska once. And had a wall full of QSL cards and all that. It was fun for 20 years, but I realized I was spending waaaay too much $$ on my 'hobby' ... And it just kind of faded away after that.

I got my Ham ticket to operate at rallies and have a mobile in the truck, got involved with the local club. They were surprised anyone under 60 had any interest in it..

I like the technical aspect, the history, the repeaters and links.. even ragchewing with the locals and doing nets.

The club gets smaller every year though..

And for the OP, I had a Cobra 75 in our 2nd Gen, got lots of trucker talk because we live off the highway near a scale. It was fun enough but I didn’t reinstall it into the 3rd Gen- only moved the Ham over.

CB's are nostalgic and old school. Still very useful on the road. Young pups these days don't understand.

I'm running a Cobra with a Wilson 1000 on the roof. Made a mount out of steel plate and bolted it to the passenger side of the console. Looks bigger than it really is. Doesn't impede on passenger leg space. I was going to get a smaller unit (or a hidden one) but wanted to make a full size unit work; that's all I have ever been running.

Cb radio can be useful, but I would just get handhold version. Also pair with a Ham radio.
