OK, I’m gonna break this down for you all. Every car manufacturer wants to tout how many cars they sell. #1 this, and #1 that.....They SELL their cars to the dealer. The dealer then sells it to the customer. This margin is usually not that much. 2-3k maybe. Many times they actually lose money or make a measly few hundred dollars on a unit.

The reason for this is because the manufacturer hangs money over the dealers head to hit certain numbers of sold cars. This also allows them to order better (easier to sell) cars from the manufacturer in the future. That cash grows exponentially as their sold units grow. This is month to month, normally. Also, the dealers get manufacturer bonus money for their survey scores. It can be hundreds of thousands (or more) of dollars a year for trying to make the manufacturer look good while selling as many units as possible. The dealers then pay the sales people and service advisors based on their survey scores, along with units sold of course. This can hang 1/4 or more of their paycheck on these survey scores. 1 bad one can ruin their month.

Thus....you breed a work environment that isn’t meant for any sane person. It can be a pretty terrible lifestyle if you work for a poorly run dealer. Unfortunately many dealers have to hire some not so great people to fill that role. To make it better, customers have recently found a new sense of entitlement (Karen’s) that make working in retail a horrible experience. People used to “do business” with these places. Which means you walk in with an understanding that it’s a two way street on making a deal. Things happen and you need to be understanding and give grace.

The only real winner is the manufacturer.

Also, just FYI, threatening to sue a dealer will only cause the dealer to stop all communication with you. Lawyer to lawyer talk only after that. And it usually takes years to get ironed out in court. Suing a Berkshire Hathaway owned dealer, would cost you more in legal fees, than a few cars...

If you really want to get back at a dealer, you just move on, and don’t give them your business.

    That’s all.

One way is not to give your service advisor a 5 star rating when you made an appointment for what they advertised as a walk-in oil change and waited 2 hours because they were “short handed.” I was angry and gave the dealer a bad customer service rating. The service advisor called me to bitch about the low rating and unfortunately for that poor fellow (and his boss) it made it worse for both of them. Lots of negative incentives exist at dealerships, but no one should let them get away with bad behavior.

Did they advertise the time frame? 1 hour or less? Or just no appointment needed? A lot goes into an oil change, tire rotation and checks on the car to make sure it's done right. Dealers are set up on lifts, vs drive over stalls like the ones at quick lube places. If they wash and vacuum your car that's going to add time too. Not to say your dealer isn't run terribly. From the sounds of it they are probably short staffed for a reason. However, it's not the service advisors fault you wasted 2 hours though. That's on management. Call and yell at that guy if you need to get something off your chest. The advisor probably lost $1000 or more of a monthly bonus thanks to your bad survey. Next time that happens, just save the guy from losing his bonus and don't fill it out at all. Trust me, that guy has it hard enough.

I totally disagree with you. If they are seeking my opinion by sending me a survey at their own volition, then they are going to get an honest answer. If they don’t like my honest answer they best leave me alone rather than calling to bitch at me and make me madder. To answer your question it was BOTH advertised 1 hour or less and no appointment necessary. I gave them the courtesy of making an appointment and I made it for as soon as the dealer was open and I was first or nearly first in line. Further, it is both the service advisor’s fault AND management. Don’t ask me no questions and I tell you no lies. Don’t send the survey if you expect a lie as to the inadequate service you have provided. I would expect no different from anyone that I provide service to. Don’t structure a bonus system based on eliciting lies from your customers that you have poorly served and then calling to bully them. Nothing personal here, I just expect integrity and a job well done, in which case you get 5 stars. I should also point out that if the survey wasn’t sent for a response I would have left well enough alone and simply not returned to the dealership.

I understand what you're saying. The surveys serve a purpose. The shame of it all is in the system between the dealers and the manufacturers. And if YES they did advertise a certain time frame, then I can understand your expectations driving in. My point being that not many people understand the dynamic of these pay structures. I also have a soft spot in my heart for service providers in general, having waiting tables in college to actually being one of those service advisors. A huge part of the reason I got out of the business due to that pay structure, and not to mention the hellish hours, and constant beat down of a job it is. I also worked at one of the best luxury car dealers in the US, who treated their staff better than any Toyota dealer I'm familiar with. I truly can't comment on how poorly that place is run. I'm sure it's bad, but I digress. I've derailed this post enough. Carry on.
