I know there are other posts regarding this, however hoping someone can point me in the right direction based on my issues. 2005 trdor w/ 185,000k. I've owned the truck since 2009.
Started up this morning, wouldn't go into reverse, never happened before. When I got to work, it went into reverse fine, but hasn't worked since. The truck does grind occasionally when shifting to 3rd gear, has done that randomly the entire time I've owned it, but never had any issues with reverse.

Doesn't seem to be a clutch issue, moreso the shift knob will not move far enough left to select reverse

In my 6spd sometimes it flat out wont go into reverse and i have to inch forward just a hair and then it seems like things line up more nicely and it goes in more easily. You might give that a try next time it happens

When it happens in mine, it will slide over to where reverse is, but it wont go up into gear

Thanks for the input. Yeah I've had that happen, but this is a different issue. Like reverse just disappeared

Shift clutch cable losing tension or bushing going bad in the shifter, which it sounds like to me. Experience both (and both are cheap fixes if that’s the issue). If it goes in easily when car off it’s not the clutch. The bushing is a plastic part you have to disassemble shifter but not too difficult.

what happens sometimes is the cable goes loose and you end up grinding the stick into gear and it’s destroys unaligned bushings over time.

Thanks for the info! It doesn't matter if engine was on or off. The shifter won't far enough left to go into reverse, like it just disappeared. I just gotta off work, and it went into reverse no prob. Not sure why it wouldn't work all day, then all of a sudden it works again.

Because of uneven wear as mentioned by other member. When it lines up it’s all good but slightly off and it won’t go in because margin of error is reduced from bad bushing. could be other things warped plate more serious but this happened to me and was a 5 dollar part.
