Taco Virgin?

My truck (shhh - nissan) is slowly going the way of the here after and I have made the decision to go with a Tacoma. My research is new but I might need the guidance of wiser, more experienced drivers. I need to 4-door and would have preferred a stick, but alas they are hard to come by... I live in Houston and am open to a used truck. How many miles should I stay under while looking? It'll be a low-mileage vehicle with not much off-roadin' cause now I have kids. What are "have to have" packets or additions? Oh, I have so many questions but will start slowly, thanks for your patience.
