Recommended water filter

I recently purchased this 13 gal truck bed water tank for a long distance trip I'm doing. I'm wondering what sort of water filter people would recommend. I was hoping to use it for drinking water as well as dishes, etc. I'm planning on getting it filled at gas stations, etc while on the road and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for getting the water filtered before it gets into the tank? Or should I just mount an in line filter at the exit spigot? Or should I just say fuck it and use it only for dishes, cleaning and stick to bottled water for my trip. Could always just bring a Brita filter as well. Shoot me your ideas! Thanks!

I would use it for no potable water, keep your drinking water separated.

If you had to drink it, get a life straw or sawyer like I've got for emergencies.

If you're filling from unknown sources always consider it nonpotable until you filter and boil the hell out of it.

Even if it's going on dishes and hands etc only I would still probably prefilter it before putting it in the tank and do the bleach/tablets as well.

And keep your own short length of hose with you.


I keep a short length of hose for filling jugs washing caked mud out of wheels that would imbalance them, filing radiator in emergency and for cleaning out the radiator fins if it gets plugged.

I was looking at that Camco filter earlier. I was kinda leaning towards it being non potable the more I thought about it.

Non-potable would be best in my opinion. We did the bottled water for a bit but grew tired of the plastic bottle trash. We have dish/shower water in our tanks and have a drinking water in one of our 5 gallon scepters. And beer.

I'm interested in how you'll mount that tank. I really like it.

Edit: And can that tank be pressurized?

 

Is the tank rated for drinking? If not, you'll want a filter that can do chemicals as well since the tank could leach toxins. I have a buddy that did a jeep filter for on board water using a system like that of an RV and Firetruck. he can pull water from any source. I'll try to get the details.

Yea it's a bummer but kinda leaning towards bringing seperate drinking water. I'm planning on either just using a ratchet strap (ez and tank would be removable when not in use) or making a metal brace to tie in to bed rails (slightly more of a pain but still removable). I have a pelican case for tools/recovery/emergency gear that I will mount to the bed in front of it and a fridge slide for my SnoMaster fridge that will be in front of that. Ill try and get a photo of my planned setup and post it. Super excited about it. There's no built in way to pressurize the tank but I may add a valve somewhere to hook a pump onto so I can do that.

 

That'd be great - especially if you could get it pressurized. And enjoy!

 

Why haul water?

Its just dead weight. 13 gallons will weigh about 110 lbs.

Go to Camping World or Good Sam's or any RV supply store for filters. You should also get a dedicated potable hose, typically white, with caps. The caps will keep the hose clean when its stored.

Hook the filter to the camp water supply, then the potable hose, then into the camper.

That tank will eventually begin to grow it's own special funk. Mold, algae........are common. It can get really bad.....

If you must haul water. Consider the jugs that go on top of water coolers. Culligan is pretty common.

 

Because I'm going to be living out of the truck for about a month while I travel from Oregon out to the east coast and back again. I was planning on doing dispersed camping as much as possible meaning I won't have access to water from campgrounds etc for possibly days at a time.

Between my girlfriend and myself we'll need water for drinking, dishes and washing up for at least 2 to 3 days at a time. Asking about pre filters for the tank to try and avoid the algae bloom cause I know that's a problem. Was looking at the 5gal jugs for drinking water to haul separately if I need too. I have a couple of those 7gal aquatainers I could bring if need be but was hoping to just use this tank for everything.

Maybe the hose filter Key-Rey suggested and cleaner tablets in the tank to keep it from getting scummy filling up wherever and then a backpacking water filter to fill up water bottles when we need to replenish. Just looking for other ideas outside the box. I agree with a dedicated fill hose though so I'm not using whatever nasty hose has been sitting outside for who knows how long.

 

Sorry and hope I'm not stepping on your post but have to respond to "why take water". I get asked that almost every trip. And will reiterate what FreshPots said. In my case though....zero fresh water 20+ miles down the Texas beach when we camp for days at a time. Zero water in the middle of Big Bend Ranch state park when we're there for days at a time. Be a hell of a run from either place mentioned to go get water. That shat is heavy but I won't go without more than I may need.

 

Step away friend. Last time I went camping with a group of people they severely underestimated how much water they needed to bring for a 4 day trip and had to leave to go get some....3 hours each way. They were not happy. They also ran out of beer though as well so obviously they just weren't using their heads. What's an extra 100lbs for peace of mind knowing I have 4 days of washing/drinking water at a time?

 

Guys, I understand why you want to haul water.

I'd urge you to use the 5 gallon jugs from water coolers. You don't need to maintain the tank. You may even be able to skip the filter and potable hose.

Your choice.

 

Right on. When I'm out on extended trips. 8 + 3.5 gal containers for dishes/shower and two 5 gal scepters. One or two more added soon.

it's the beer I can't figure out? And nope not for me and folks like you....I've ran out of water once. It was not fun. Fishy ice and warm gatorade only one evening way, way down the beach. No coffee the next morning made it even worse.

So easy to blow thru 3-5 gallons in 1 shower. Just use a sponge/cloth with a bit of soap to wash the dirty bits, use a different sponge/cloth to wipe off the soap, towel off, done. Use 1/2 gallon at most.

Traveling across country, hit a motel or a campground for a night. They will have full showers.

 

Holy shit man. Not planning on sitting there dumping drinking water all over myself for minutes at a time...I know how to conserve water while camping. Why is it so hard for you to see I want to just use one container for everything though even if it takes a little extra work? Saves space which is in short supply.
