I sit around and look at all these gains I am trying to get into while I wait for fidelity to get my account swapped, but I need to sit back and remember I turned 18 on 1/30 and since I started my Roth a few years back and my Brokerage about 10 months ago, I am up 42.6% in Roth and 77.3% in brokerage. Don't think I've done too bad for an 18 year old.

My thinking is spend my money on this now so I have a chance to retire early. I really don't want to work until 60 whatever that most do. Also why I'm going to school for accounting and finances. If I can manage corporate funds or other peoples money, I can sure as hell manage my own.

If I suspect the market will crash hard in a few months, does it make sense financially to sell most everything in my Roth IRA? I figured if it does crash, great I just saved some money. If it doesn’t, oh well, I’m only behind a month

What do you mean sell everything? Just leave cash in there until a crash?

Well you also have to consider that most 18 year olds aren't even saving at all. 'Most' now are getting 30-100k in college debt or working and blowing it all cause they think the small change they're making is something big and haven't adjusted yet; not even remotely thinking about investing or long term. So in the grand scheme you're not just ahead, you're wayyyyyy ahead

Sell my positions before I suspect at crash so no money is in stocks. Then after a month, if no crash, buy back in

But what if it crashes a month after you buy back in? It’s all a guessing game

timing the market is very difficult...i think @TreeFortRichard had a post in here a few pages back about hedging/locking in profits...
by selling out you are giving up 'time in the market' which is the most important thing...so if you're ok with giving up potential gains there...then go ahead...also note it does trigger a taxable event (i.e. cap gains tax) if you're not using a tax-advantage account.

I wouldn't sell out,,,not yet anyway...this market has some more room to run.

I've got cash that I'm totally prepared to dump every bit into if there's a correction or dip. But I'm not gonna sell out of anything because that's just part of playing the long term.

basically if you're really worried about it...buy puts with a long out expiration...that locks in your profits for a fee (i.e. cost of the put).

i will say, the market is quite frothy right now...but i see it running hot for a little while longer...earnings have generally been positive...FED is keeping rates low, Congress + Prez seems intent on more stimulus/recovery funding...
there will probably some sort of correction or pull back (10-20% maybe) sometime in the next few months...but definitely nothing like last year.

never bad idea to have cash on hand to deploy in big pullbacks...get a list of 'expensive' and/or blue chips stocks that you want to own long term and when things dip...buy 'em.
