I’m out of guesses. Plus it’s getting late in my book. Working tomorrow puts a damper on “my” time. Gotta keep it going

Chicago-Pneumatic chipping hammer or "rivet buster"; a heavy duty pneumatic hammer that's going to be used to remove and replace the boiler tubes in our club's 1912 Sawyer-Massey traction engine:

Awesome, yes. Fun? Not always so much... being the "young guy" (at well north of 50), I get to be in the fire box which is 3x4' using that to collapse the tubes and drive them out; imagine beating a hammer against steel plate for hours on end. Foam ear plugs, with ear defenders over top... SORRY, WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Oh yes, that part sounds not so fun. Ear ringing, stuck in a fire box in tight quarters.... good luck!

There's no torque like a steam engine; every stroke is a power stroke in both directions. ~65 BHP at the flywheel, 45 at the drawbar and >2000 ft-lbs of torque, all at 2 1/4 mph!

For 7 years I worked as a stationary engineer 3rd grade. On Friday evening of labor day weekend they would shutdown the boiler. On Saturday morning a company would come in and Eddy current the tubes, and map out all the tubes that had to be replaced.

We had super cool machine, (basically a drill with a core bit) that would cut the welds. The drill would clamp into 3 tubes, then you adjusted the X and Y to line up the bit, cut the weld then move to the next hole. After you finish one side the you move to the opposite side of the boiler.

After all the welds were cut then you start pulling them out. They never come out easy. Some times we'd get them half way out and they would get stuck, then you do whatever it takes to get it the rest of the way.

After all the tubes were in we would tig them in. All the work had to be done by 4am Monday because the city inspector would be there at 10am.

Sometimes there wasn't enough time to replace all the tubes so we would plug them.

Maybe the coolest part of the job was, with nothing more than a high school diploma, you were a licensed engineer.

You had to go to the NAPE school for 3 months to get licensed
