What's the name of the shop? I had a customer that came from Hawaii with about the same issue. When I go to open his diffs up, the pinion crush sleeve, wasn't crushed.

    What fluid where you using?

I have my doubts about the order of things. My guess is the bearing shit the bed first then the gears "blew out".

Freak incident? That is exactly what a warranty is for. They are full of pus. Stand up to them. And contact Nitro.

I'm just starting to go down this road of regearing. I called NutHouse industries today for an appointment and quote. They said they stay away from Nitro due to issues recently and more lean towards Revolution or Yukon. Interesting point considering this conversation

Man oh man, I couldn’t be happier with my 5:29’s on my 2008 4.0 vs w 5spd AT on 35’s. My truck is my DD & although several dudes said “MAN YOUR RPMS ARE GONNA BE SCREAMING WITH 5:29’s, AND THEYRE WEAK, THEYLL BREAK BRO” all false. All wrong. Local legend ZUK did the gear work, I pulled and plugged my diffs and it all went really well. I also did REM polishing to the rear ring & pinion.

Btw at 70mph Im at 2550 rpm in 5th. It’s beautiful. I confirmed this speed with GPS. I am so darn giddy to be able to wheel the truck with this powerful gear selection. I did a HARROP front e locker also.

That's awesome, glad you went with 529. It is totally worth it. Take it easy on that little rear 8" diff though . I would feel like a TOTAL DUMBASS if I did 4.88s in the 3rd gen. 4.88s should come stock in them.

FWIW I paid about $3500 to have ZUK set my gears. This included a NO CORNERS CUT 5:29 nitro package - all new bearings and seals. And a $250 REM treatment to rear Diff. And a $1200 Harrop/Eaton e locker. I did all the labor of removing and reinstalling diffs myself.

They didn't crush the pinion sleeve, which left the pinion loose

ZUK!! This guy knows his stuff. I went through him also for my gears. Really down to earth guy and interesting stories if you ever meet him. His "shop" is completely fine tuned part of his house.
I didnt get REM polishing, but mine were Cryo'd 5.29s. Factory Elocker. Quite as can be, no noise. Maybe the slightest coast hum above 70mph. You probably wouldnt notice unless I turned off the radio and pointed it out.

Appointment booked for early April! I hit up nuthouse industries in Cincinnati. They choose this kit https://www.revolutiongear.com/product/2016_newer_tacoma_8758ifs_gear_package_488_529
+ Ecgs bushing. Looking at $3k for install, parts, and follow up 500 mile appointment.
Feels a little on the high end but not totally unreasonable imo. Very excited to get this done. Currently checking in at 6300lbs loaded down on 34s

If its quality work, includes all the fluid both times. Not bad.

    Conclusion:
Gears alone will result in about 1-mpg loss. Moving to a 33" will result in an additional 1-2 mpg loss. I have no data for stock gears and 33" or 35" tire.

I would expect someone to get anywhere between 15 - 18.5 mpgs with 5.29s and 33" tires depending on driving habits, load etc. Could be more or less.

I'll also note that I did not fuel up at a specific point each time, I filled up depending on where we were an availability of service stations so some fillups were half a tank, 3/4 tank, etc. However all calculations were based on miles driven and gallons filled.

The Corrected MPGs take into consideration a 7.27% change in tire diameter.

    [/QUOTE]

I know this was years ago...did you get any updated info on 5.29s and 35s mpg? Im on stock gears with 32s and my digital screen says 15mpg. Hoping to be around the same (or better obv) with the new tires and the new gears.

Also you have the "corrected" mpg. How are you tracking this with the digital screen? I know how to do it on a 1990s vehicle with no digital stuff. is it the same?
