    Hi Miss Susan.

I like to nibble on a cold slice of pizza while I’m waiting for the rest to warm up.

when i was in AK I worked a couple of races. my first was a ceremonial start for a local race. it was about 10* that day, downright balmy for January in AK. I showed up dressed in all my snow gear - thermals, snow pants, parka, boots, hat, gloves. only a few other volunteers were dressed to be outside, everyone else was in just regular clothes. so the folks who were running the whole thing decided to put me on the front lines and I was to catch the sleds as they pulled up to the starting gate and picked up their riders - it was a charity thing that the mushers would run the first 20 miles or so without their gear and would have someone riding in the sled instead. I think that year it was big brothers/big sisters and the kids got to ride along. anywho...I thought it was insane to "catch" or stop a dozen dogs running full speed and towing a sled that even empty would still weigh a couple hundred pounds. i got the hang of it pretty quick - the biggest thing was to watch you didn't step on the dogs' feet - and the teams were all very obedient so when the musher told them to slow and stop they did. i still had to grab the harness of the lead dog and half pick them up to keep them from running while the kids jumped in the sled, waited for the min 2 minute time between sleds and let them go on their way.
one of the mushers pulled up and HE jumped in the sled, told the kid to get on the back and drive. I was like wait, what? no.... I was afraid to let the dogs go  he insisted it would be fine and we sent them on their way. the dogs were so well trained that they didn't know who was driving, they depended solely on voice commands and were still doing exactly what he told them to do. that kid was hanging on for dear life. i found out later that the musher had arranged ahead of time to get one of the older kids, he had planned to do this all along and he made sure that he had someone who would be able to handle being on the back of the sled.

My youngest granddaughter is now in 3rd grade and lives on the other side of the mountain. Some of my favorite days are when she suddenly spams my text messages with pink hearts and teddy bears. Enjoy your visit, they are incredible gifts.

Ugh - the weather guessers are predicting an ice storm tomorrow night - .5” to .75” range where I am. Great... I better make sure I have enough gas on hand for the generator.

For Valentine’s Day I watched my wife of 36 years call many of her long time patients to let them know of Dr. Bob’s passing. She did not want them to be caught off guard. It is care like this that made his practice so amazing. There aren’t enough flowers in the world for a woman like this.
