Heaviest towable travel trailer for a 3rd gen OR??

I’m in the market for a travel trailer to go cross country with in the coming months, and have been told around 5000lbs is the best/max weight for towing capability. I know the max is actually 6500, but if anyone out there has actual experience with such endeavor, I’d love to hear thoughts!
To add, looking at a 29’ trailer with a dry weight of 5400....doable?

 

A 29 footer I would'nt do with my Tundra, let alone her tacoma. That is a huge sail behind a light truck. Will it pull it, sure. But that trailer will drive the truck, rather than the truck driving the trailer.

I would stick with 5k or below if using it cross country.

 

Great start to my question, I hadn’t even thought of that as I have never hauled a travel trailer. Thanks bro! My truck will be loaded as well, obviously not to squatting weight, but definitely heavier than stock.

 

Lots of advice on this forum already. Most people won't recommend a travel trailer with an empty weight over 3500-4000.
The best thing you can do is rent a trailer and see how you and your truck manages it.
Also, more importantly than towing capacity is payload. Check what your truck has on the driver's door jamb. The hitch weight of a trailer counts as payload, as well as any passengers, cargo in the truck, and mods that your truck has.

 

Everyone loves to point out payload and gvwr in a towing thread but completely ignores it when it comes to “overland” builds that are 1000lbs over gvwr...

But that being said, I’d pass on a 29’ TT for the Tacoma just because of the length as much as anything. It’ll push the Tacoma around quite a bit compared to a half ton

Rent a trailer half that size. Overall to the Tacoma isn't much of a tow vehicle, if you pack a family of 4 and all their shit in the truck, you'll only have a few hundred more pounds of tongue weight to hit capacity.

 

Reason I’m thinking so big, is I will be living in it permanently on a dropzone in Arizona, transplanting my entire life from VA. This is all great info, thanks homies! Keep it comin!

 

Sounds fun, good luck, but you might have to start shopping a new truck,,, definitely a half or 3/4 ton, but if you have to tow across country and live in this semi permanently? I'd be looking for a one ton.

 

Buy and set up in Arizona rather that tote cross country

Move your stuff in a more traditional way. If it all fits in a 29' trailer, it should be easy to manage. More so than that trailer behind a Tacoma.

 

A one-ton especially or a 3/4 ton is complete overkill. It’s a sub 7500lb trailer wet and loaded for a trip...

 

Factory receiver or aftermarket bumper with one built in? The bumper manufacturers should list a max tow capacity but you don't want to get near that weight as I'm guessing that potholes and other quick stresses will temporarily increase the pull resistance. For example, Apogee Offroad says they have towed up to 9000 lbs with their aftermarket Tacoma bumper but in their words "it was sketchy."

 

Stock bumper/tow setup, 2”AAL R/2.5” spacer F. Man, you guys are all over this. I appreciate it fellas.
My situation is different than most, hawking most of my belongings to live minimally and make life goals/dreams a reality, so not too much besides clothing and outdoor gear will be with. Dog with me, cat and wife in other vehicle with additional trailer, so nothing more than I would say 800lbs additional for weight overall dispersed in bed and trailer option. Heeding all of this input!

 

I haven't pulled 5400+ with my Tacoma but, I do pull a 3300lb(dry) TT. I wouldn't want to pull anything heavier is what I've always told myself. The truck does great in S4 with ECT but hills are still a struggle at times. Unless you don't mind 3rd gear at 60mph every now and again. I try to avoid that and just loose a few mph until the hill is cleared. Ideally, I feel most comfortable at 60mph on most highways. I avoid the interstate if possible, but 65mph is doable when I have to.

 

I will most certainly be enjoying my journey, so speed is not an issue. Looking like 4K is going to be the best total weight I’m looking for then. 55mph is optimal mpg anyways. Thanks man!

 

I have no doubt my Tacoma would pull 10,000# but I sure as hell wouldn't go any where with it. 3500# is a comfortable tow don't forget you need to be able to stop it also. Forget to plug in the electrical connection? No brakes you'll never be able to stop some thing that big. Get in a bad situation? Your going for a ride if you live through it you'll never want to do again.

 

If you're just moving cross country and are going to park it at a site, I'd seriously consider moving traditionally (box truck and dolly) or a moving company if you're still wanting to enjoy the cross country trip. Why compromise in either 1) smaller trailer to live in full time or 2) larger truck you won't need the vast vast majority of the time? Buy a camper when you get to Arizona. Then you can "push" the size limit a bit.

 

Yea, enjoy the trip! That's the most important detail. Getting there can be fun if you take your time. Then again, it's usually just me and the wife. Nobody screaming from the back seat "are we there yet?"

 

no. Look at the sticker inside your door for the actual tow weight max for your specific truck. OMG... a 29' trailer? Are you kidding me? Talk about a tail wagging a dog...
Question... do you drive at 6500 rpm when you drive? That's the limit right? With machines, the best place to be is halfway between the "limit" and zero. Not at the limit. The speed limit for the truck is 110 mph. DO you drive 105?

 

Totally agree. I set behind a jack knifed overturned TT on I-10 for 6 hours a few months ago because some genius was pulling a 29 footer with a grand cherokee. It was a clear day on a flat straight stretch of road. The TT was passed by a semi and started getting speed wobbles when the trailer went sideways and flipped on it's side raising the back tires of the cherokee completely off the ground. No one was hurt and miraculously they just gently slid down the highway a few hundred feet before stopping and those of us behind were able to slow as well. Pretty scary scene, but looking at it made me wonder what went through the driver's head to think his set up was safe. He had a sway control hitch, but that seemed to do very little except kept his cherokee attached to the trailer.

 

What brake controller are you going to use? Where will you install it? If you don't need that pocket above your left knee, Meso Customs will make you one of these. The cost is about as much as the controller itself but worth it!
