RPMs are more important than vehicle speed, although both are important. The main point is you're trying to properly seat the piston rings in the cylinders. Too constant of an RPM for too long can cause pre-mature mirroring of the cylinder walls which isn't good. It could also cause an improper seat, which also isn't good. Varying RPMs allows the temperatures to change a bit within the cylinders.

Long story short, hills and curves will be good to help you along with avoiding using cruise control, although that last one isn't necessary if you do it correctly.

OP, don't beat the crap out of it, don't set the cruise on long flat sections so you can vary rpm, beyond that don't worry about it, will be fine. Happy to see people that still care enough to try and do things right unlike many who have posted here.

I do love these responses of "I did X and no issues yet, have now X number of miles (which is barely past first or second oil change) without issues"

Engine isn't going to blow up. Engine break in has been around forever. Don't break it in relatively correctly, it's not going to have issues right away. It's when you hit 50k, 100k and your consuming oil, engine noises, trans slipping and so on. Then you pass off to the next poor soul who then comes here screaming and badmouthing their used vehicle purchase because it was turned into a POS by the previous owner. Instead of lasting 300k+ like it should. Especially when you add in the 10k oil changes on top of it.

Well i think i educated my truck well by carrying 1300 lbs of concrete bags, and towing my 5x10 utility trailer with a cement mixer, and tools 75 miles to a job when the truck had less than 1500 miles on it. At nearly 7k miles now it seems a happy truck.

I would like to thank those of you with the helpful advise, I appreciate it and now mostly understand. I "do" want to break it in right irreguardless of some who feel the manual is only a suggestion.
I do agree with Tigris99 on that reasoning and no concern of what the next owner gets.
I will deviate the RPM as advised.

Just drive. There are a few things you can do to break it in better. Mix it up with some 2lane routes if possible. Just don't try to drive 80+mph. Try to vary speed and engine rpm some if possible. I would not tow unless you must.
Don't worry about it that it overtakes enjoying to trip

You keep the speeds around 70 mph or under....no high sustained rpm's, and don't tow till you have at least 1000 miles and you should have a happy truck.

If you can drive 18 damn hours and the speed or rpms not vary, you’d have to be a damn robot.
