Honestly OP, i think about selling my shell too. It makes off roading feel more clunky, the truck is less agile, i bought a base model shell so no reinforcement for heavy loads on top either. Not to mention shells are ugly.

The worst part is, i have a short bed, and so i dont even see a point in building a sleeping platform back there. If i had a long bed I think i would like the shell more.

that being said, gear lives back there now, stuff that would get wet or stolen without the shell. So thats a good thing...i guess?
The added security is cool, and knowing i have a hard walled shelter if i need it is nice too. Overall, if i could do if again i think id get a nice bed rack like the cool kids have. Id say, give it some time, and if you still have that bad feeling; sell the shell. There is a shell selling thread on TW and everyone is hoping to snag a cement shell

Edit: shell pic cuz why not

A shell is nice for camping when you want to stop anywhere or do anything where you will have to leave your truck and all that gear.
Otherwise you will be so paranoid about your gear that your hike won’t be so fun.
At least that is my personal experience from prior to having a shell

Nice shell. Yeah it’s stupid it’s taking this long. They tell you 8-10 weeks when you order knowing you’ll do the sale and when it takes double the time, they just blame it on A.R.E.
If they told you 16-20 weeks in the beginning, everyone would walk.

Makes me wonder, how many -brand per- manufacturing facilities, there are throughout the U.S.
I mean, think about how many 3rd Gen Tacomas, ALONE, are being sold out there, that are getting a canopy for their new rides.
If they're made somewhere mid U.S., then shipped out to a paint facility, dunno.
I remember when I bought my LEER for my 04, it took 10 weeks, and that was back in 2005.

Also makes me think, do the dealers need to have a -minimum order- before they can send an order.

I guess that depends on how you camp.

I can easily cover over 100 miles on foot and camp for over a week with just what's in my back pack.

I had one and totally regret selling it. I sold it cause it was a pain to keep taking off and on when transporting my dirt bike or atv. I should have just got a trailer..

I’d imagine you could craft or hire a seamstress to thread an annex. I don’t think it’d be too hard once you decided how to attach fasteners and which type. Dimensions may be tricky. Use some neoprene as a gasket on edges and silicone treat canvas as annex material for heavy winters. May be tricky but worth a shot if you like the idea for short bed sleeping. My $0.02

The wife and 2 year old don’t really go for that lol. I’m lucky to get the wife camping at all. I’ve done a little backpacking but it’s not really my thing. I definitely get the enjoyment though. Being so disconnected is amazing
