I used to do a bluegrass/americana radio show back around 1980 on KAZU Pacific Grove, Ca. back before Americana was a word and after moving to L.A. for school would often go to The Banjo Cafe when it was still around and still go to McCabe's, where I photographed Doc Watson as part of my final photography class at Art Center College. Hanging with Doc likely changed my life and one of those images became his official photo for the last 26 years of his life. I have a soft spot in my heart for bluegrass and old timey music and bands like Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, J.D. Crowe, John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band and many many more still have the best vocal harmony blends in any musical genre. Front row at Great American Music Hall SF to hear Tony Rice's '35 "Clarence" D-28. His Freeborn Man solo still blows me away. Here's an image of Ralph and the famous one of Doc.RalphStanley_4.jpgDocWatsonB&W_McCabes.jpg

Link to live sound board audio from Billy Strings shows.

We access mixlr through the internet on our fire stick, which is plugged direct to the receiver that recently got hooked up to some 301s. Sounds amazing..

Big ones are King suspension, SSO bumper w/winch, Pelfreybuilt sliders.
I got into bluegrass when I started playing the mandolin. My guitar was too cumbersome to take on camping trips, and I was getting bored with it. I'm now loving the mando, and might do banjo in the future. Just can't get a hang of those off beat "chucks" though. After a couple bars I always find myself back on the beat lol.

Caught Billy live when he was in town for 4 nights. HIGHLY recommend going to see him if he’s in your area.

Seen him and the band many times now. First time in 2015 I think it was, most recently at Carnegie Hall with Bela Fleck and My Bluegrass Heart lineup, and saw the band twice in November.

actually another 4 night stream from the capital theatre this Thursday thru Sunday, just go to https://www.billystrings.com/tour

I regards to NEW old style music, I discovered Billy Strings a few months ago along with Colter Wall, Charley Crockett, and Sierra Ferrell thanks to some folks at work. It had been refreshing to hear newer artists taking up the task of putting out good music despite the modern standard or lack of.
As for one of my old favorites, there will always be a place in my heart for The Hee Haw Gospel Quartet.

You should check out the John Stickley Trio and Leftover Salmon for some newer stuff. The banjo player from leftover salmon is a friend of mine and I went to school with Stickley.

Why did it take me so long to find this crew? Grey Fox is an hour from me, and I’d love to get to Fresh Grass at MassMocha in North Adams! Bela may be the only band I’ve seen more than Phish, I’ve been a fan since he was with New Grass Revival! He may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that boy can play! There’s another Adirondack festival in September near Elizabethtown NY but it seems to always conflict with a canoe race I do…
