It's a compounding problem, and even in Colorado we are seeing the effects of this storm. This has mainly been a NG fuel supply issue (wells freezing) that feeds mostly combined cycle power plants. Hell, even two Nuke plants tripped off. Then having little to no wind generation, solar really sucks with cloud cover, the utility companies just can't supply the demand. TX only has one DC transmission line crossing the boarders, so that pretty much sucks to help with generation recovery from outside their boarders.

This past weekend, I wasn't totally sure that Colorado Springs wasn't going to see some outages. There were units tripping offline all along the Front Range.

Right now, there is 200 MW of wind generation available out of 4500 possible MW in my area. Solar isn't doing bad, but we had snow again last night that effects the panels. Power is VERY expensive right now, so conserve where you can.

Texans are strong and stick together. They will get through this like any other major storm.

Thanks for sharing! My eventual retirement property is going to require a plow, and I had no idea about a rear mount.

Here in Oklahoma they bought out all the bread too. I guess everyone needs to make French toast during a winter storm or something.
We got about a foot of snow and I’m tired of helping dig out stuck cars on my street corner. There’s no practical place to hook a chain or strap on these modern cars so it’s been mostly shoveling snow and pushing

It’s not so much people buying more bread. I deliver coke/ dr. Pepper to walmarts and bigger grocery stores. The bread vendors are not getting shipments due to weather and bakery’s down. We are not getting anywhere near the resupply we need, short on a lot of products. Lots of it normally comes out of Texas.

I love my home state. There are so many beautiful places. I'd still like to retire someplace else. I was thinking Texas but maybe another state a little more south than PA, like Tennessee, North Carolina or west like Utah or Nevada. I always thought the western countryside looks amazing.

A lot of newer cars will have a little plastic cover somewhere on the bumper, if you pop that off there's a place for an eye bolt to thread into. Eye bolt is usually in with the spare changing tools

"There’s no practical place to hook a chain or strap on these modern cars..." I guess manufacturers expect you to roll down the driver's window and wrap your recovery strap around the steering wheel?!?!?

I don’t think even preppers were ready for this much mayhem.
I thought I was prepared for this. I’ve dealt with hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, snow emergencies from TX, LA, AK, MS. AL. FL, New England, the East coast and it has taught me to be prepared.

But I found I need more preparation. I have semi and non perishable food, a small Honda 2200 generator because 1 gallon will carry me for a day. A wood fireplace in case the power goes out in the cold, and of course 40 gallons of propane. What I will be getting is an inside propane heater for supplemental heat. IDK if they make a kerosene heater for indoors, but I’ll look into it. But fuel needs to be readily available in small 5 gal quantities too.

I don’t own a camper because I can move faster to safety without one. Plus I can rent or borrow one if I need to for camping. But I rather stay at a log cabin or I can use my tent.

I am still looking into a collapsible truck camper I can drop on the ground so I can stay out indefinitely, and move freely, as I have a feeling we have not seen the last of these great natural disasters.

This is a reason I have a 4X4 Tacoma too. It gives me the option to add more resiliency.

    Stay safe everyone.

The worst issue I've seen with the weather is people leaving their homes to find warmth, and then their power comes back on, thaws their frozen pipes, and water causes tons of damage. Our neighbors had this happen and they have an awful lot of damage to their home, not to mention all the water on the street now. This also makes the water scarcity even worse, with water main breaks all over and water treatment plants offline because of power.

First and foremost, I hope everyone in Texas stays as safe as possible. I saw that we are looking at 24 dead already and that is likely to climb. Heartbreaking. Be sure to check in on the elderly. Knock on your neighbor's door and ask if they are okay. And one other thing that I highly recommend -- please find your water shut off valve and turn the water off! When things finally thaw you don't want a fountain going off in your house!

Like your strategy. Living in NY and Quebec, we have a small place that we go to on the weekends. We have a low barrier prep plan. Five big water jugs. Plenty of water for several days. Several LED lanterns with back up batteries. Now I have light. Two electric blankets -- that are low voltage that can be powered by batteries or solar. Camping stove with back up propane. We can go three to five days with that low profile prep. Water. Light. Heat. Food.

Stay safe everyone. We are rooting for you!

This! Find your power supply and shut the water off. 100%.
