That is a neat idea. There is probably not many better ways to maximize socket space specific to a drawer size. And for a little time invested, it will save a couple hundred bucks in socket organizers. I have probably 200 sockets so even a cheaper timken tray adds up when I have 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2” and all of them are in std, metric, deep, shallow, 6pt, and 12pt. Not to mention sockets for torx, std/metric long and short allen, etc... Needless to say, I have a 30” deep drawer that’s 5ft wide and is full for sockets. Granted, most of them are shadowed in foam so they’re taking a ton of space.

I’m not bending wrenches on aircraft anymore so I can simplify and maximize my toolbox organization. My wrench drawer was recently gone through since I took out my foam and added trays, I’m still shy on space there too.

I may dedicate a few evenings and copy your idea.

 

I use Ernst rails as well. Front to back in the drawer. I really like them.

Used my tekton 3/8 drive torque wrench for the first time today.

 

Ernst is probably the best customizable socket trays Ive seen, I have two of the 3 rail ones for all my non hex sockets to be organized on.

 

I like them. Wish they had a flex head.

a flex head torque wrench? wouldnt holding the wrench at an angle change the torque value?

Little bit of flex head is ok and won't change the torque enough to matter, were talking maybe 10-15 degrees here.

 

Snapon makes a flex head but you could accomplish the same thing with a adapter. Just calc it before. I'd not want to dive into a torque situation without some guidance. I assembled hundreds of engines for Stan Mizell and he'd slap the shit out of you for something like that.

yea its because of the moment arm. basically the distance from the pivot point to where the force is applied. Thats the moment arm. thats what determines the torque. if you use a flex head and lift it up, you're shortening the moment arm, changing the amount of torque youre actually applying, so the reading isn't accurate anymore.

 

You guys have it mixed up with the flex on the torque wrench. The torque setting is actual torque at the head, if you shorten the distance between the head and the end of the torque wrench, the torque at the head is the same. You just need to apply a little more pressure at the handle to get the same torque. For example, your torque wrench is set at 100 ft lbs, and you have a 12” handle, you’ll apply 100 lbs of pressure at the handle to get that torque. Now shorten the angle by half (45* of flex at the head), you’re still getting 100 ft lbs when the wrench clicks, you just need to pull the torque wrench harder to get that same torque. The wrench will click at 100 ft lbs regardless of the angle of the wrench. The angle just means your arm does more work to get that torque.

Test it out, take a bolt and torque it down to x torque with the wrench at 45*. Then torque it down the the same torque with the wrench at 0*, the bolt won’t move any further.

 

Your link refers to torque adapters. Yes, this does change the torque value because it changes the distance from the head of the wrench to the bolt being torqued. If I use a torque adapter, I always put the adapter 90* out from the handle of the wrench. This keeps the torque the same, if you’re using the torque adapter straight in line with the handle then you need to do the math based on the length of the adapter to get the proper torque.
