Question about substituting shocks.

    I'm working on a build for a 2008 Limited V8 T4R, but my suspension lift order is currently being held up waiting for the rear shocks (Bil 5100s) which don't even have an ETA from the manufacturer.

    I do have the factory shocks from my 2010 TRD OR Tacoma collecting dust in the garage, though.

    If I'm willing to live with a crappy ride (tacoma is still my daily) and won't be taking it off road at all, would anyone think it's maybe possible to install the rest of the new suspension, including Icon 3" lifting springs in the rear replacing RAS (front is going to be 5100s with 888s) but use the factory bilstiens off the tacoma on the back end of the T4R? This would also be without the front/rear bumpers and winch installed, so it'll definitely be sitting high and won't be able to fit the real tires yet so it'll be goofy looking on the current 30s that came with it...

    I'm trying to get the whole build done by June, and need to get the XREAS lines out of the way so I can get going on the sliders

    I wouldn’t run factory shocks in the rear with 3” of lift. That could turn into a real expensive headache.

    It'd be the factory shocks off a tacoma on the suspension of a 4Runner. I was thinking the leaf suspension might have more droop depth and maybe make the taco shocks workable on the T4R. If the temporary shocks got damaged, I wouldn't be too bothered by it, but don't want to cause damage to something I'll want to use in the future.

    I wouldn't be driving it very hard, if at all. Mostly probably just to move it in and out of the driveway while it's not the proper setup. The main objective would be to get rid of the factory XREAS, which I'm pretty sure wouldn't work well with everything sitting that high (all the springs are sized to sit at about 3" with several hundred pounds of weight that won't be there). I need to clear the frame for sliders, but don't want to disable the vehicle entirely.

    Yeah, you'll be fine since you really aren't going to be driving it. You might even be able to get away without shocks in the rear if you are just moving it in/out of the garage when needed.

    The Tacoma rear shocks need to have the lower shock bushing replaced to fit the 4Runner tho. These fit and work - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CN9D4E

    I'm currently running 2019 Tacoma ORD Bilstiens front and rear on my 2003 4Runner, with 2007 FJ rear coil springs.

    Do you know what the difference is in the bushings? It seems unlikely that the bolts are different diameters between three T4R and Tacoma. Is it a matter of different widths? If so, is it something I could kludge up with either trimming or washers? I don't have the kind of press I'd likely need to remove the existing bushings from the shocks and would prefer not to buy one just for something like this.

    The stud on the 4runner is larger than what is used on the Tacoma. Not possible to kludge something together for this. You only need a couple sockets and a bench vice to press out the old bushings. It's not too difficult.

    Last update from Wheelers is that they're getting their batch of Bilstiens in another week or 2, and they're holding the whole order for those. I've got the front bump stops and the RAS conversion components already, hoping to have the rest by the end of the month. Turns out substituting isn't going to be an option or an issue.
