I recently picked up my first Tacoma.. 2013 Base Limited 4x4 Double Cab 5ft bed.. It appears to be fully loaded.. Heated Leather Type seats,Turn Signals on side mirrors, USB connector..With a Decent amount of Chrome on it (I'm sure its plastic),18" Wheels with chrome covers.
I'm Curious on the Difference between the Base and TRD and is it possible to turn it into a TRD.
I'm planning on changing the Leaf Springs anyway. Just curious.. I bought her a month ago and its snowed pretty much every week since and she loves the snow.. but I haven't spent anytime under the hood or under the truck yet.. Sooo any info would be appreciated.. Also would love to add a Remote start for Obvious reasons, lol

    Hey there. Welcome to TW.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to turn it into a TRD.
I’d make it better than a TRD. Better shocks and springs.
You can use your springs or get better springs. I’d start with Belstein 5100 front shock if you want to lift the truck. If you don’t want a lift maybe look at the 4600’s.

The above shocks are a starting point. I suppose it depends on your budget. :spending:

Thanks, Well, Stock height is fine, I have a 97 Jeep TJ with 5 inche's of lift and the Taco has almost the same ground clearance.. Leaf Springs, are Saggy so they're getting replaced once it warms up (I do all my own work, this way if it's screwed up,I can argue with myself :) )

My understanding is trd doesn’t add a whole lot beyond the price and sticker. What engine transmission combo is it, 6 or 4 cyl, manual or auto? You could go through the sticky’s, find recommend mods. 4x4 with 18s I think is unusual, I could be wrong.

Customizing is a journey. The first things I did to mine was a coded alarm, tint, head unit and speakers upgrade, tires, adm mod. The stereo was a huge improvement over the stock non jbl crap it came with. Sticky tires and it corners better than I ever thought a truck could. I also did the hurst core short shifter.

Congratulations, you now own the best truck on the market. Welcome to TW. Post us up some pics.

To me the only option worth it's weight that came on trd trims is the rear locker. Lots of options for these trucks as far as that goes, and most are equal or superior to the oem locker.

Other than that I guess a better suspension setup, which again, isn't that hard to get one better than the trd package.

    And welcome to the forum!

Yeah, the rear locker is really the only thing that you should care to change if you're looking to make it as capable as a TRD. Obviously upgraded suspension is nice, but you seem to like the height so I'd wait til you need to replace things. Just my thoughts.

Welcome to the forum! And post pictures!

Oh and buy some TRD stickers just so that people who don't understand Tacoma's think yours is somehow superior :)

I think if you buy parts and turn it into a TRD, you'll just end up buying more parts to personalize it to your needs.
I suggest just buy the parts you want to make it into what you want.

Thanks Craig, But I've already bought the Spyder Black Projector lights.. Also I have a Jeep TJ with 5 inches of lift, 4:11 gears, Running 35's with a winch and a snorkel.. The Taco is for Comfort. And occasional sheet of sheet rock etc. I Just Empty Every Pocket years ago. So whatever makes this ride like a cloud is what I'll be doing to it :)

^^^Welcome and what he said. You're really only missing the rear locker to be a TRD Offroad, like my '07. Or ATRAC on the 2.5 gens(if I remember correctly). Just stick to the suspension that suits your needs and do the time researching. A side note, consider the load rating of those leaf springs you're going to replace. I'm already going to replace my HD Dakars cause they didn't hold up, even before my camper went on.
