How can I permanently disable Toyota GPS tracking?

Lol if you have your phone on they can take a pic of your change in your pocket.

 

After a relatively minor accident, and some internal strife, I let the NHSTA read the EDR in my wife's 2009 Land Cruiser. They have a program that gathers accident data and supposedly utilizes the data to help create safer cars blah, blah, blah. The EDR records and stores EVERYTHING, though for exactly how long....I am not sure.... but from what I did observe, on this 10 year old EDR, it appeared to record all day every day for an extended period.

 

TBF EDR will be mandated sooner or later. I have a cop buddy who related it to air travel. Black boxes are there to make the cars safer in the future and protect the driver from litigation should the car do something wonky on him. Once cars are even more automated, to the point most have some version of self-driving capability, you'll want the EDR on at all times to save your ass if the computer smacks a 5 yo in a crosswalk like it's the autofetch in Cyberpunk 2077.

 

Seriously man... nowadays you are tracked by 83 different sources so what's one more?
The only true way is what @tonered said earlier...
Buy a 1970's vehicle
Use a pay phone or snail mail to communicate
Use cash but not over $10K
Do NOT connect to the internet in any shape, way or form.
Never stay in one place for long.
Do not own any land
Stay out of any town over 20K of people.

Anything else and you will be tracked by something.

It's possible to go dark but you gotta really want it.

Personally I can care less if Toyota knows my every move as I don't go anywhere I shouldn't be.

 

Also don't forget, if you tamper with something that both the manufacturer and your insurance company consider to be safety-related equipment they can deny coverage if something were to happen.

I'm not saying it's fair for insurance companies to behave this way.. but if something happens to a brand new expensive truck, they're looking for a way to get out of covering you

 

There's also another option. You can jam GPS in a local area. I mean it's illegal as all hell, but at least it'll be funny to watch the soccer moms lose there lane as you pass when their Nav unit fails until you go to federal prison. Oh, and most jammers for GPS take out cellphones, Bluetooth, pacemakers, etc etc. You know, all that nasty watcher crap

the read was roughly 2 months after the event. He asked for the date of accident, which I did not recall. So he said no problem, and scrolled back through the data until he found the big spike in the yaw sensor. Perhaps I misunderstood what he was doing.

 

My story aligned with the EDR... I even had the speed within a mph or two.

 

Toyota states they have a couple types...

In both cases, the EDRs record data only for collisions that meet certain criteria that are based on the severity of the collision.

I know right...it started out in a powerslide and we're all "he cant recover", then came a shot of legitimacy around the data collection aspect and basically IoT and its like "well ya, thats interesting, he might pull outta this slide". Then the over correction of the slide and we're like "yup, told ya he couldnt contain"

Seems today if you vote the "wrong way" or "purchase" the wrong fire arm you can become a target. The FBI has shown up at people's home for being in DC on Jan 6th. They tracked people's phone and credit card use. If you were in DC on Jan 6th you will or are being investigated. Do not underestimate the power of the Federal government today and never talk to the FBI for any reason. Answer a question differently than what they want to hear and you just lied to the FBI and you will be bankrupted and may end up in jail. The guy in the Foul hat was right all along.
