Okay before I posted this I read every word on my issue on two different forums. I have some extra details I’d not seen so here goes...

Last week I was upgrading my stereo to a Kenwood mechless head unit and it was icy and cold. So to stay warm I idled the truck from time to time to run the heat. Is started the day with a little over 1/4 tank and finally the low fuel light came on.

Not wanting to drive it to the gas station with the dash apart and tools everywhere I just dumped in 5 gallons from a can I’d filled in case I needed my generator if the current went off.

Alright, so a day later the stereo was pumping 80’s big hair metal through apple carplay and I was stoked! I ran to the wawa to fuel up and after 5 gallons the pump shut off and refused to pump gas without shutting off every 2 seconds. I drove across the street to another station and same story.
The only difference was while at the other station my CEL and traction light
came on. Now I can only fill until the filler neck is full and the gas just sits there and doesn’t drain into the tank for minutes.

What’s up and how broke am I about to be?

Sorry to open my membership with a problem. Glad to be here.

    Bill

When you filled up from a can. Did something maybe break off the nozzle and fall inside your fill neck?

Sounds like you are going to need to disconnect the hose to the tank and take a look?

Or find an inspection camera and see what you can?

80s hairband... You got a hairball in the gas tank.

One of those snake cans would be a good start, I don't recall if 2nd gens have the metal flap to keep debris out at the fill opening.

Sorry I should have asked first, what is the CEL code? You should be able to get them read at a parts store for free if you don't have a scanner.

Probably a stuck closed vent valve. Something stuck in the filler neck wouldn't set a code

Are you sure the gas gauge is correct? Maybe you didn't use as much gas as you thought, and you just overfilled the tank and caused some gas to get into the charcoal cannister system.
That'll set off a CEL code.

Is there still a charcoal canister in these trucks? I'd say it's likely this or the vent. Easy to know if it's the vent because your fuel gauge won't say full.

Maybe it's not a charcoal cannister. I think I just dated myself. But there is a system in place that catches the fuel vapors and holds them until the next start up. Maybe its a Vapor Cannister???

I thought about the possibility that something broke off the gas can and checked for that. The can’s filler tube is in tact. I don’t have the flap that protects the truck’s filler neck from debris nor the anti-siphon spring/screen either. I suppose I could have slopped gas down the vent and spooked the evap filter.

Where is that vent valve? I hope it’s not over the spare tire because the winch that lowers and raises the spare is stuck.

I think I can eliminate that as a possibility because I drove the truck 218 miles before this happened.

The only option l see is to get a scope and look down the filler neck. Even if its just to eliminate that possibility.
You drove 218 miles then put in 5 gallons of gas from a can. Then pumped in another 5 gallons at the gas station. If you feel that the tank is not full and not taking gas, then you have an obstruction.

Any chance your gas can USED to have a dust cap?

My guess is you got something from the can caught in your filler neck.

See if you can push something non sparking like a piece of large gauge solid copper wire down the neck and find a blockage.

Next I would remove the filler neck from the flex coupler and try shining a light through it then remove it completely and try to back purge it.
