I am currently in the middle of replacing the timing chain on my ‘05 4.0L due to the original one being stretched. It is at 160k miles. I picked up the Cloyes kit from RockAuto, which comes with the guides, tensioners... everything except for a couple of the sprockets. I simply couldn’t bring myself to buy all new parts from the dealer so I’ll let you all know if I have a failure from this kit in the future.

As I am attempting to swap out the old crank sprocket for the new one, I’m noticing the the old one slides off and on the crank quite easily, but the new one will only slide on around 5mm before getting completely stuck. Upon inspection of the new sprocket, there is no obvious defect on the inner surface that is in direct contact with the crankshaft.

I’ve also compared the sprockets and found that my original one really has very little, if any, noticeable wear. As such, I have a couple of questions that I’m hoping someone here might be able to answer...

    1) is there some kind of trick, that I am missing, needed to get a new crank sprocket on?

    2) would it be appropriate to simply leave the old sprocket on?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!
