That is certainly your prerogative. But, lemme just say that while the MIL On symptom might be real, that is not all that these new tunes do. The better description is in the 2019 / 2020 AT TSB-0092-20. There is a lot going on under the hood of this TSB. I felt it with 04B14. I wouldn't go back to 04B13. There's a significant difference in the base code.

    ^ what he said

I went from 04b12 to 04b13 to 04b14. Each one of them has been a noticeable change in the stock calibration to me and was definitely worth the upgrade

Sorry probably a dumb question, but what is MIL?

The thing is, i really like this truck for what it does.

Looks great, hauls my stuff like i need it to.

I just need that 1800 rpm kick, and 2000 to 2500 rpm surging gone.

I've been able to smooth it out with tweaks over time to the throttle, which I've posted, and still use. However, that one thing just keeps coming back.

Don't even care if rev hang and the dfco kick stay.

If someone were to say 04b42 plus vf tune fixes it, then i would bite.

I've been holding out this long being hopeful.

Matt even said once he thought he found the cause in the way the exhaust valves were tuned and was working on a fix.

I just know it feels like a hard miss fire some days, others it's subtle. Sometimes it happens in second gear while accelerating, and it does it so bad the truck bucks and jerks and i have this take my foot off the throttle until it stops then reapply throttle.

I don't hammer the throttle either, i just cruise around.

It's not consistent enough to recreate, i haven't been able to capture it in a log, my logger is now finally working again in the latest update so I'll keep trying.

The 1,400 to 1,800 bump happens to me a long while into the tune settling. Our edits seem to soften it, but it is still there after about 1,000mi.

Yes. The is supposed to be some guidance on the exhaust valve overlap. I am hoping that once this version update calms down, we can get around to that and the other features that OVT posted.

I was on a 3day, almost 1,800 road trip and just enjoyed the hell out of the Taco. It was getting hucked through coastal and canyon roads. I couldn't imagine the same trip on the Stock tune. The 2.0 tunes plus the edits made it a really fun time. The linear throttle, low end torque, buttery smooth shifting, and perfect DFCO were coming to mind.

I'm looking forward to digging back in to the edit soon.

For the most part, highway and cruising it's great. It is city driving requiring constant passes through that rpm range and long subtle grades that bring out the bad side. I currently try to keep it above 3k rpms on the long grades to skip over the lunging, even though it pulls it fine at 2500, i can't stand it... lunge, lunge, lunge

Agreed. City driving is what pushed me to try editing. It is much better than it was and just a remnant in 1st gear now.

Same here, WRT the surging in the 2000-3000 range. The only way I can really avoid it is to granny the truck or keep the revs up.
It gets super annoying on the highway when I'm pulling a grade, just maintaining speed. Feels like I'm dropping a cylinder until I back out of it.

What surging are you guys talking about?

I mean if I floor it at like 1500 in 2nd when I pull into traffic and need to accelerate very quickly, it does surge a bit for like a second. That feels completely normal to me though, you are asking for full power at very low rpms.

I took my my taco on many long road trips and it’s a joy to drive, it’s really fun to drive. I can’t get enough of it.

It was great on stock tune, but on a premium SFOB it’s an absolute joy!

    Not talking about flooring it.

Get on a long slight incline.

Run the truck at around 2000 rpm in 5th gear.

Ease into the throttle to maintain speed, notice the truck has a rubber band feeling.

On a 1 to 10 scale of annoying, it's a small child digging their feet into the back of your chair at the movie theater

That ruh ruh ruh ruh surge that you describe right after 1-2 at high load is not what we're talking about.
I believe you when you say YOUR truck doesn't do what we are yapping about. But understand that not all trucks run the same way. I learned that a long time ago when dealing with my '16.

    I see.

No I completely agree that 3rd gens are a bit inconsistent, I learned that after spending few years in this forum.

so i didnt log today on my way home from work, and ended up having that horrible jerk at 1800 rpm that caused the whole truck to buck, damnit, of course it does it when im not logging.

anyway, i logged this morning and had a pretty good jerk/lunge when shifting from first to second gear. I pulled off and stopped the log so i could find it easier.

here are a couple of snips.

what i noticed (if it is anything at all) but after first gear runs out, i let out of the throttle, shift, and get back on it. After ive gotten back into the throttle, the timing is in the 40s then dumps to 4.5 degrees.

It just seems like the timing is a little late to the party. I understand why it changes, just that its a bit late to decide what to do i guess. Not even sure if this is the cause but figured id post it.

    timingdump.jpg

    timingdump2.jpg

also, i found out, if you click and hold, and drag from top left to bottom right on the csv viewer, you can zoom in. if you click and hold and drag from bottom right to top left, it will reset the zoom

also, for the sake of it. I loaded up 2.0 regular SFOB 2 days ago so i could log without any of my changes skewing anything. This file is unmodified

Ok, I'm gonna be that guy... I haven't been here in 2 years and have 1000's of posts (and drama) to look through on the main OVTune thread. I figure us MT guys are more level headed, so I'm just gonna ask you guys for help. :)

I'm still running OVTune 1.04 on one of the early dongles. I got 4.88 gears installed, and I'm planning for a lift and new tires this spring, so I want to get my OVTune updated as well. My company locked down our laptops so I'm basically starting from scratch with no drivers or software installed.

So, what do I need to get my OVTune updated? Do I need to send in my dongle to get the VF stuff or can I just grab the latest versions of Open Port and Toyota Flash Manager and update like I used to?
