I have what left from the factory, so that may be a factor. The old truck would cruise up the incline all day barely revving past 2500. The new one I'm sending to the Moon at 3500-4000.

Not trying to have a debate, just stating what I've personally experienced where I live. Both engines had their strong and weak points...

Interesting. I do a lot of mountain passes on mine and i like it. I guess i havent driven 3rd gen AT on same passes. My buddy has 19 OR and he doesnt complain, he did have 13 4.0 as well.

Peak torque on 4.0 comes in 600 rpm sooner.

This is the same style filter that's on my '14.5 Camry. It's a 2.5 4cyl. The 3.5 V6 in the Tacoma is the same one that Toyota uses in Camrys, Avalons, and anything else with a 3.5 V6. The Avalons and Lexus have the metal canister. I still don't understand why Toyota cheaped out and used plastic filter housings on some cars, and aluminum on others.

My 2002 Kawasaki ZRX1200 had a cartridge filter, a guy made an adapter so it could use a normal spin on filter. With all of the cottage industry around these trucks I'm surprised no one has done this.

Just changed the oil/filter on our Camry 3.5L today for the first time and it's exactly the same as the Tacoma. The plastic filter came off easy. Didn't even bother with the small drain/o ring at the bottom of the filter housing.

I pissed and whined about it when I first saw it, but now takes me 10~15 minutes to change the oil, and I can inspect the filter without needing to cut it open.

Fir me it's more about filter availability.
Spin on, everywhere, cartridge not so much.
Used to cartridges on YFZ450 and Husky TE450.

Change oil like a beast!! Dam!

I like the drain gizmo thingie. Works well just a PITA to clean. (Not that it has to be super clean)

IMHO l wouldn't say they cheaped out as l would rather have the plastic. If for some reason the threads ever get screwed up it will be the canister that gets torn up and would be simple and inexpensive to replace.

    New to TW, not Yota.
Wife's RAV4 uses the same style filter housing. After the free oil changes were over, I switched the plastic housing the aluminum TRD (need to replace the center tube for RAV).
I hate the plastic dooheekey to drain the fileter, so I got a screw in metal one, with a drain house, to route oil directly into the oil drain pan.

Do you know where to get ahold of the factory service manual? Dealer sent me to a website and I am struggling.

Am I the only one that doesn't use the little drain on the housing? I'm used to oil coming off of the spin offs, so I just crack it and let it drain into the pan.

Just an anecdote to add. I don't love oil changes on the Tacoma. The filter is messy, but at least the addition of a fumoto valve made draining nice and simple.

I recently acquired a 1968 Karmann Ghia. As with all new cars, I quickly got to changing the oil. Ok, got the drain valve out, drained nicely. Oh wow, 6 bolts to remove an "oil pan" of sorts to get the the filter. Not so bad. Oh and now I need to manually clean a metal filter which is really just a glorified and battered strainer, ok. Oh and don't forget, once you're ready to reinstall - there SEVEN crush washers which all have to be lined up carefully and definitely CAN'T be over torqued.

I got this all done then moved into the air filter - which on this vehicle is an OIL BATH AIT FILTER. If you don't know what this is, Google it. My filter change requires scooping oily leaves and muck out of a ~2 qt container and spraying out a coconut fiber filled canister with hundreds of little holes. YUCK!

So I guess my point is... It's all a matter of perspective.

Nothing wrong with doing it that way, I just prefer to not make a mess, if I can avoid it

I use the MotivX housing drain and cap tool. I also have a Fomoto Valve. They allow for an oil change with zero mess. I might use one paper towel. Filter housing doesn’t even get nasty….cleaner is easier for me.
