1st gen guy here with Supercharger and Black paint. My AC sucks unless I’m cruising when it’s hot and sunny. Are electric fans really as shitty as a lot of guys make them seem? I see a lot of people claim a electric fan could never cool as well as a fan clutch.

I’ve also been thinking about a condenser fan but it would have to be a small fan and only cover 1/4 of the whole condenser. Not sure if that’s even worth the effort.

1st Gen superchargers do not have an intercooler that covers the AC condenser like 2nd Gen, so sucky AC performance is independent of being supercharged. Electric fans can be highly effective for low speed applications, but you need a real electric fan that is integrated into an OEM style shroud. Many are an open fan without a shroud which will perform poorly, or low quality eBay style fans which are even worse. To do it right you should look to find an OEM grade E-fan integrate it into the OEM style shroud and wire it to automatically come on with the AC. Common projects for this include junkyard OEM fan builds. Even name brands like flex-lite might seem tempting, but they are typically an open fan and a significant loss in performance over OEM.

How did you fit this? I’ve been brainstorming a build this week. I feel like fitment would be a serious issue here because of space loss due to intercooler

    Hey there,

I've been talking with crashnburn80 about this topic and would like your input, if you are game. I have a 2009 6sp with the stock 3.73s and p285/70/17 (33s) on it. They are not heavy load tires.

I have ordered 4.30 gears (in fact, they are sitting in my living room) and I'm waiting for my TrueTrac to arrive.

In the last few days, I've decided that I MAY want a S/C. I reached out to crash and he suggested that those gears would be a tad steep. I don't crawl and I don't have any weight to speak of, other than a canopy. I'm, mostly, looking for some more fun in the truck. I've been on 3.73s since I bought the truck new and 33s almost as long, so this is not a requirement.

However, I don't want to marry two things, that do compliment each other, together. The reason I went with 4.30, is I thought I was being conservative. Most conversations about gears online said that 3.73 to 4.10 was not enough to justify the cost. Many others(and gear shops that I inquired with) suggested 4.56 or 4.88s. I figured 4.30s would be a nice compromise.

Now that I've talked with Crash, I'm rethinking my strategy, but with no experience or mechanical knowledge to help noodle through it logically. I'm, kinda, fumbling around in the dark.

I don't wheel, I don't crawl, I don't race. Truth be told; I have sold one of my motorbikes and have $20,000 cash to play with and that is not always a good thing, if you don't have a clue what you're doing or investing it in. A fool and his money are soon parted. So, just because I CAN, doesn't mean I SHOULD.

The S/C seems like fun, most people agree, but I don't want to counter act it with improper gearing. Can you comment on this? Knowing what 3.73s felt like moving to 4.10s, would you surmise that 4.30s would be too much?? I can always return the 4.30s and get 4.10s.

Any help with this would be much appreciated!
    Cheers from Canada!!
    Barrett

So i run 4.56s with a supercharger and 6 spd on 35" tires (probably about the same final drive). The top speed in 6th, on the rev limiter is 107. I personally liked the longer gears - it seems to pair well with the torque of the supercharger. If i could go back i would bot have geared so steeply - just my 2 cents.

Since you have bigger tires that stock I say go to 4.30s . You drivetrain will be happier. I have 4.56s and have no regrets.

4.56 with 33's non S/C was awesome with an OV Tune. Now I am S/C with HP tune but now have 315's and more weight. it still great but would have gone 4.88 if I knew I was going with larger tires. N/A or S/C. 4.56 is a great size for AT. MT prob would go 4.30.

@White lightning boosted your thoughts with 4.10s, 33s and SC? Though if I recall you went back to 35s.

I run 285/70/17 with a supercharger and I did 4.10. Went with a totally stock 4 cyl front diff from a salvage yard (~$400) and an ECGS-built rear diff with a Trutrac. It was a nice improvement in acceleration over the 3.73.

I do an occasional road trip so I value a relaxed cruising speed and I think 4.10 is a good balance between acceleration and cruise RPM. If I’d gone 4.30 or more I’d be disappointed.

I don’t crawl or even off road much at all so take that into account. I also don’t know off hand the difference between my AT 5th gear ratio and a manual 6th gear ratio. So maybe on a 6-speed results would be different.

    Its all personal preference though.

that is the perfect combo imho. 35's have me missing it and considering 430's or 456's

I now have the @crashnburn80 Tacoma. It's still on 32's, stock 3.73 gearing (auto trans), but I have added significant weight to it when fully loaded on a trip with the camper. CAT scales said that I was 5,9xx lbs on my way home from the White Rim Trail a few days ago… Low range takes care of any actual crawling on technical trails or steep shelf roads. The supercharger makes up for the stock gearing.
