60+ year old thread.

Good morning, everyone. I was up at my normal 4Am but have been having consistent issues with the computer keyboard. It's wireless and will sometimes just stop working. I've replaced keyboards and keep having the same issues. This morning I realized that if I held the keyboard on it's side it would work. Eventually, I realized that the issue is the wireless transmitter in the computer is not working properly - if I sit the keyboard directly in front of the computer instead of on the keyboard shelf on my desk, it works just fine. What a pain.

I also noticed that I had water under our boiler last night - just recently repaired. I pulled the front cover and found the drain valve is leaking. Called the plumber again last night - they are supposed to come out this AM to fix it.

And, today, we get our second vaccine shot.

I hope the drain valve won't be a major issue Mark. Technology is a pita sometimes. My wireless mouse was acting up and I replaced the battery thinking it was that but it still was an issue. I checked to see if the reciever in the computer was still plugged in tight and it was. After shutting the computer down and rebooting it, I finally had to remove the receiver from the computer and reinstall it and it worked flawlessly. Keep us posted on any side affects from your second shot if you would. Deb and I get our second on March 7.

Morning Porch - from the State that does weather 4 seasons in a week. Beautiful recovery from ice and snow to a bight 80* yesterday, back to the 50's and drizzle and grey for a few days. Wet stuff will be good though.

Second shot update - I got Moderna #2 yesterday, and that arm is sore compared to the first. Overall, a little stiffness, but nothing else. Can't complain.

Holy Cow, Kurt has an original pocket notebook! Those things were so great, a guy could actually preserve random thoughts
Anytime of day or nite, and come back later to review them! Technological genius in a shirt pocket!

 

Now a days almost all my thoughts are random and of little importance. I could probably fill that notebook in an hour with random thoughts.

 

I started using one back in my QC Manager days, and haven't quit since! This year I upgraded to a SECOND book for just "bills", since I pay them all on one day now. The red one is my chore book and appointment reminder. Yes, I could put them in a cell phone, but putting the X in the DONE box is much more satisfying. And since my thoughts DO tend to be in random order, I don't have to worry about putting project steps in the right order when I think of them either!
Of course, I have a spare ready. Not some kind of chicken poop outfit here!

 

No kidding about the weather here in central Texas. Last week Tuesday it was 0 degrees for a few hours around dawn. This week Tuesday it hit 80 degrees in the afternoon. Never know what to wear for the day!!

We've been without running water from the well since Saturday, the 13th. Booster pump has a huge crack in the cast iron motor housing .... a pump less than 5 months old!! Still waiting for the well service guy who had to order 40 new pumps. He's backed up, but I'll be calling him again in the next few minutes.

REALLY need a shower!!

 

We were so lucky. City power never left us (rumored to be on same "switch" as new fire and police call centers), and city did lose MOST (but not all) water. It stayed on in a trickle so something moved through the pipes. I got water from the pool for house use. Water was "off" Thursday, sort of back Saturday, restored Sunday, and boil notice lifted Tuesday.
I have a list of things that will be installed by next winter though....

Boiler is now fully repaired- they had to replace the drain valve so it was quick work. It's actually nice to have found a plumber who responds to calls and meets commitments.

We got our 2d vaccine shots yesterday - Moderna. So far, my reactions have actually been less than with the first shot. I have a little tenderness at the injection site, but less than the first shot. The nurse who gave us our shots talked a lot about second dose reactions - much more than with the first shot. When I got my first dose, I failed to do what I learned in the Army - drop down and knock out 40 push-ups. Allegedly, it gets the blood flow going and helps dissipate the serum...which supposedly helps reduce arm soreness. I had to wait until I got home, but knocked out 40...and my arm now is much less sore. I throw that out there for your scientific consideration. We'll see how Lynn and her mom feel this morning.

Sometimes old school is the best way. I use a small not pad and usually get discouraged when my T0-Do list hits 25 items. I tend to knock off the items one at a time.

So true about plumbers. I called one, in the AM, on Wednesday and left a message and then used the service reform on his website yesterday in the PM. Still no response. He has done great work for me in the past.

I found that as far as bathroom plumbing go, Polished Brass is a thing of the past now. I had a hard time finding a Moen Polished Brass bathroom sink faucet.

Russ: I played the guitar in my youth but stopped when I went into the service, Big mistake on my part in hindsight. I started to take lessons in October, Zoom on line, through our local community collage Senior Program. My old Epiphone Calabro from 1964 has the bridge lifting off the flat top. I did some research and bought a new Taylor AD27e. Nice solid wood beginner guitar at a decent price. I am going to call a luthier today to see if he will look at my old Epiphone and give me a cost to repair. If the cost is decent I will also ask him for a cost to perform a guitar set up and restring with better strings suited for a beginner. The guitar is more sentimental than practical, which is a luxury I can afford in retirement. My CFO may have a difference of opinion.

Thanks for the second shot information folks. We get ours on March 7th and they will be Pfizer vaccines. So far people down here have no major side effects after either shot so I'm that we won't. But every bodies systems are different.
We spent 2 days in Clearwater visiting Debs cousin and his wife (nice city, but too touristy and crowded for me) and they said it really gets crowded during spring break. We met up with a friend that moved to Cape Coral. We worked together for 25 years and we still get together when they come up North. We went to dinner at a beach bar last night and watched the sun set.
Heading back to Vero Beach this afternoon.

Nice pics Ken, Clearwater has always been a huge tourist stop both for out-of-state and in state vacations. My baby brother (turns 60 in a week) lives in Naples and my sister lives in Winter Park plus all their kids live in FL.

Cold this morning and high winds predicted for later this morning, glad I got the drive plowed and shoveled yesterday. More white stuff in the forecast - keep it commin. We need it bad.

My second shot isn't scheduled until the 10th of March (Maderno) - thanks for the reminder on the push-ups and feed back on your response to the second shot Col.

Have a busy morning, why on a Friday, I am supposed to be retired. Looks like I might get a few more events under my belt in the third and fourth quarter of this year. Fingers crossed, would really like to keep active for a few more years but at a much lower level - kind of pick and choose what I want versus having to take everything.

Hey, I'd just like to thank everyone that is posting their Covid shot experiences. We got our first one Tuesday after being on a list since the very first lists and having to wait for 65 to be the cut-off. We traveled a hundred miles (one way) to get it and our local health department (18 miles) called us Tuesday evening to say we could get it locally. Of course now we have to return to the first location for our second dose.

It is amazing how fast the news has changed. My doctor died about six (?) weeks ago after being in the ICU for three weeks, two on a ventilator. My son and a nephew has had it. Everyone lives in small towns away from large urban centers so we have less transmission in our areas. I can't imagine what you guys living in cities are going through.

Exercise, eat sensibly, and get a good night's sleep.

I go to my boxing gym 3x a week. Taking two weeks off and was back at it yesterday. I feel sore, but great to keep working out.

I was swimming (1500M), bike (15 miles), running (5K); 3 times a week. I managed to get three sprint triathlons in 2019. Arthritis in the knees sucks, still holding out on replacing them, but the doc told me to stick to cycling and swimming. Still, I take the dog out for a good walk.

I've been slacking with the bad weather but need to get back up riding. I may have Parkinson's, zero ability to balance on two wheels, but it doesn't keep me from riding.

 

Welcome to the Porch roundrocktom. Your exercise routine makes me tired reading about it. Sorry to hear you have Parkinson’s. My wife has Parkinson’s and we know exercise is the best treatment and therapy for it. Boxing more than anything else improves Parkinson’s symptoms. I know you know that. I’m a former boxer from 40+ years ago both amateur and pro and still like to hit things. I bought a heavy punching bag for my wife but I find myself using it several times a week. Punching a heavy bag for a few minutes is probably one of the best cardiovascular exercises there is and it improves your hand eye coordination, balance, strength and on and on. In addition it makes you a bad ass. Wrapping the hands and putting on the gloves always brings back memories for me of days long gone. Think I’ll go out to the garage and beat the crap out of the bag for awhile.

 

Our boxing class is Parkinson's Boxing. Good physical and social activity for us. Keep me moving with footwork, my jab crossed, duck, slip. We do the 1 through 6, then the coach calls "southpaw" so the right foot comes forward and everything swaps on those calls. Punching while trying to remember the correct slip. My best compliment was my son's comment "I need to get back to the gym"

A friend in Dallas didn't do much the first ten years after diagnosis. Her daughter talked her into doing a 5K, Mom kept on running and has completed 99 Marathons in the last 10 years. Yes, 20 years after diagnosis she is still running marathons.

I had really slowed down but started working out like crazy in 2015. In 2016 had DBS (deep brain stimulation) as I was maxed on taking medication every three hours. I would walk and talk for 90 minutes, but then was like a light was turned off and really quiet for 90 minutes. I remember barely getting on a plane, taking meds 30 minutes before landing, running through the PHX airport to catch my next flight. Barely able to get down the jetway once home. I had one flight, bad weather diverted us to Dallas. Took me 24 hours to get home to Austin, TX. Oh I, like an idiot, packed my medication in my bags as I had "12 hours of medication on me". Finally realized brain surgery was the way to go. I still need medication, but 1/3 of the previous dose.
