Rear End advice (differential, brakes) - rust..

#1 - What should/do I need to buy for the rear brakes. Both sides need drums atleast due to cracking. Springs fell out of it while taking the drum off so.. Is there a complete kit that comes with all of the insides? Or is the backing plate too far gone in your opinion?

#2 - I have not looked but I am hoping there is a guide to swapping internal differentials/replacing that I can use for what I need to do. But, is there anything I need to know before I do the job? I don’t know how it comes apart but I hope easily. Should I order any seals for the rear differential. I heard people say stuff like keeping the position of something the same before and after or it will not drive good anymore.. which part

It's the driveshafts that should be marked before removal.

 

Nothing is impossible, with time and money (Plus good input) from the fine folks on these boards you should be just fine. I would honestly start by stripping the Frame completely, cleaning it up and replacing the crossmembers. Gives you a nice blank slate to further your vision in restoring the vehicle.

RockAuto is pretty good starting point for stuff, Amazon is not bad to get parts as well. Good luck should you pursue this all the way....dont forget to keep us posted as well.

Thanks for the input . It'll be a few years until I am driving so I have the time, not lots of money but I will see that this project keeps getting chipped away at. I'll look into getting these parts and I'm sure ill have more questions.

 

You could probably reuse the backing plates, mine look worse than that. I would agree that replacing the cross members is a good idea, and probably the gas tank as well. Check out this thread:

I bet most every thing cleans up .

I just watched this video, and so what two pieces need to be in the same time? Is it only the driveshaft and the little piece that connects it to the differential, or is it the driveshaft AND the differential.

 

that frame is done for, not safe.

 

Good god man, I think you have bigger problems than the brakes. If your rear crossmember looks like that, what does the frame under the cab look like? That looks super unsafe to drive.

I front end wrecked my rust free taco with a spotless frame epending on where you are just come help me salvage it and it's yours

 

Funny we all look at things different then there is only so much pictures can show .

To me what I see does not like bad at all compared to what I have seen in person.

Then the part of the country plays into things some what .

 

I’m in a rust zone, definitely needs cross members, maybe more. My gas tank had a hole in the top, it looked 90% perfect, only rusted under 1 strap on top. Yours I would clean off, sandblast, look for holes, and pressure test. If ok, epoxy prime or POR-15.

Another frame may be the way to go if you can find one for a reasonable cost, that one is probably very weak from all that rust on the rails. Sandblast the whole thing and see what it looks like after.
