Yeah there is the odd troll for sure..
One thing about TW though, there are more than a few members who get prickly when they see negative threads about the 3rd gen. Some will jump right to the conclusion that you must be a troll, especially if you have a low post count. Now, there was a time on here when that did happen quite a bit, so there is something behind that attitude.
There is also a posse of.. super fans, for lack of a better term, who will attack and call you down for complaining. I've never understood why they can't simply resist the urge to click on a thread that ruffles their feathers in some way:notsure:
Anyway, I'm definitely interested in the outcome of your story. The more you know...

Hahaha by no means am I trying to bash the tacoma as a whole, im obviously here and a little frustrated bc I do LOVE my truck. I have seen some of the posts you are referring too just slamming the 3rd gen, aside from this issue I've had no other complaints.
Thanks for responding, gives me some peace of mind my baby might be ok! Lol. If I can have her back on the road with a warranty extension as well, id be a happy customer.

Do you happen to know what code is was blowing? Here's what happened to me....

"I have had it since feb 2018 and last month (feb 2020) got a check engine light at 35,000 miles (P11EE00) they sent off my cylinder head and they recommended a new one(under warranty) and they also replaced oil pan and timing cover for some reason. got my truck back and now there is a strange sound coming from my dash that sounds like a vacuum leak or screech when I get to 3,500 - 4,000 rpms going 40-50mpg so ill have to take it back."

anyway they still haven't figured out my weird sounds that only happens at high rpms but they are going to look into when i bring it on for my new fuel pump (recall)

It is not uncommon for assembly line engines to have an inherent defect. Manufacturers may test engines for 100's of thousands, if not millions of miles during R&D but that is still a very small sample when compared to how many units exist when an engine goes into mass production. Probably 98% of all 3.5 Tacomas will never have the issue but some folks will win the unpleasant lottery of a major engine repair. The engine plant in AL built 3 million engines in 2 years (they build 4, 6 & 8 cylinder engines so not all of them are 3.5's)....and that was 2014 so that plant has kicked-out at least 10 million engines by now. If 99.9% of them never have an issue, that still leaves 10,000 engines that could have an inherent defect.

Couldn't tell you the actual code number, they said it was showing misfire in cylinder 3, then the next day showed misfire codes on various cylinders, tried spark plugs didn't rectify the issue, then got into taking the engine apart. That noise sounds like a headache and a half I hope they are able to straighten that out for you man.
Yep, can't say this is a lottery I've dreamt of winning hahaha. Crap luck but glad that Toyota is standing by their product here, at the end of the day having the engine rebuilt by toyota under warranty and them extending that power train warranty is great service you probably wouldn't get with other brands.

I kind of expect more of them to start dropping like flies, I don't think in the big scheme of things the 3.5 is going to have the legacy of the 3.4 or the 4.0. A message board is not a real world sample.

More than that. One guy had his fail at 60,200 miles or something (Warranty Timer lol). It seems to be a sudden failure as well.

As much as im obviously hoping that's not the case, its true those earlier motors are just so reliable and proven, gotta go messing with things in the interest of fuel economy. The 3.5 in the 3rd gens has been around for a significant amount of time as well, just new to the tacoma. Time will tell.

It usually works well with TOYOTA, others maybe not so much. I know.

There have been several engine failures, mainly in valve 5 and 6, towards the back of the motor.
I believe there is a dedicated warning thread on this topic. A lot of trucks have been produced, and mostly by machines/robots. These things Apparently need calibrated and checked more often.

I bought another Tacoma (one pre-taco, 2 first gen’s, and a second gen previous) because of Toyota’s reliability, but also because the have a strong track record of going above and beyond what is reasonable to keep their customers happy. They had problems with the old 3.0 v6’s and totally stood behind them. Same with the frame rust issues. No mechanical thing is perfect, Toyota seems to get that.

Right on! Thanks for the info. Out of curiosity, a bit of trivia to feed my own mind, are cylinders 1, 3, 5 vehicle left? And 2, 4, 6 vehicle right?

No we don't know, IDK, just not worrying till I see a 1k here.

Moreover, I see production changes by all manufacturers across the board without failure being a reason all the time. Sometimes its to improve the product, sometimes to save money and every now and then to do both.

Ironically, when there is a failure change it takes more time. It could be because it has to be thoroughly investigated. Like the infamous CPS sensor as an example.

And no I don’t have a clue as to what the sample rate is on this sight to the real world, but I do know that the real world only seeks answers in a forum when an issue presents itself so 10X is probably a safe bet. But to answer your inquiry no IDK or claim to know, but I’ll start to worry when I see a 1k fatally wounded tacos.

I had a 2017 have a cam holster failure at 19k miles. Apparently the seals went bad and they had to almost completely rebuild the motor. Then I had to return it due to the new parts having a "bad cast". Oil was leaking thru pores in the aluminum. Haha I think we just have bad luck. However they did extend my warranty with platinum coverage no questions asked, so I'm sure you'll be compensated for your inconvenience.
