New member so forgive me for any stupidity. I have a 98 tacoma on 35's that I'm swapping a third member out of a 2006 tacoma trd v6 auto 2WD WITH factory e locker. I know the modifications to fit it. From everything I have read it has 3.73 gears. I was told by someone that you cant gear it down to 4.56-4.88 because theres a 4.10 high and 4.10 low carrier??? Is this true for toyotas? If so I cant find if anyone makes a 4.56-4.88 thick (non reverse) Do I have to cut my losses and sell the third member I just bought or can someone send me a link with the answer or gears I could use? Again forgive me for any stupidity this is my first tacoma build

Are you wanting to take the 8” E-Locker 3rd member, and put it into your Non-locker 8.4” differential?
I seem to recall not too long ago, a similar thread on this same type of question. Although it was on a 5 lug truck?

Maybe @Dalandser will know. He seems to be the guy that knows all the technical stuff on the 1st Gen trucks.

    A. If the OP knows how to modify a housing for a non-locking diff to fit an e-locker third, it's surprising he isn't aware of stuff he's asking about.

    B. 2nd gen guys with e-lockers regear all the time. Here's a list of gear sets for them:

There are no carrier breaks for the factory elocker. Make sure you use the elocker master install kit, as the gear set is the same as what’s in any V6/turbo diff from back to the 80s. The elocker install kit will have a larger bearing near the locking mechanism. To mount an elocker into the 8.4” housing you need to grind and drill a bit, to get the mounting holes lined up.

Thanks for the help 6 geart444E that answered my question. The person that told me there is a carrier break must not know what they are talking about. Thanks for the links I could not find those when I was looking.

You cannot easily mount an 8" elocker diff into an 8.4 housing, it is not like grinding and drilling an older 8" housing, as explained in the 4x4wire link that Dalandser provided under "Toyota Electric-Locking Differentials". The entire diff mounting flange is a different size/pattern.

I see the thread says it isn't possible into the older 8" housing but mine is a 98 8.4? I know it's just the bearing caps and the 12 bolts on the ring gear that's the difference but what year didnt they change the housing surface and bolt pattern? They form makes it seem like 2000? So If i get almost any locker before 2000 i can do minimal cutting and drilling to fit it into my 98 tacoma correct? Or is it just because mines a 8.4 it has completely different mounting surface? I'm just confused because other pages arnt correct and its miss guiding me. Would it be easiest to swap the whole rear axle with a newer 8" housing if I can find one?

The housing needs to be re-drilled on a couple of the mounts, and ground away where the e-locker collar fits on the drivers side. It will fit, just how much work you want to put in is up to you. Your truck is old enough that it should be easy to find an e-locker axle for your 98 for a decent price. Swap your axle shafts and new 3rd member onto that, assuming it isn't rusted and the spring perches are in stock location.

Perfect I'm pretty confident I can do the work I swapped rubicon dana 44s under my yj jeep. Worse case I'll just buy a stock e locker axle if I find one. Thanks!

If you are trying to swap an elocker third member into an 8.4 non-elocker housing, it is not nearly as simple as drilling a couple of studs and grinding the motor notch. Is that what you are talking about doing? You need the entire housing. The 8.4 diff mounting flange is larger and none of the studs will line up.

That's true, that modification is only good for the older 8" housings on the pickups. The 8.4" housing has bigger studs and the pattern is alot different.

Okay.. well I'll have to keep my eye out for a housing. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
